I received this book as an early reviewer and it comes out May 1st.

Jen Doll, the author, is a reporter and a blogger. This is her book about going to weddings, and how she feels about weddings, and marriage, and love, and relationships, and being single. There are some funny moments, but there are also some really sad moments (when she makes out with a guy at his bachelor party and has a drunken temper tantrum when she's asked to leave). I was hoping for a light-hearted, funny account of being a wedding guest, but it wasn't that. The funny moments are usually about drinking too much and hooking up with a wedding guest and it felt very juvenile. Interlaced with those moments was very serious introspection about what it means to be married and be successful in relationship and, to be honest, that's not what I was interested in. The writing was okay- definitely more blog style than memoir or novel. The audience for this book seems to be women in Jen's shoes- 20-30 somethings who are not married and all her friends have already found their "one".

I'm kinda disappointed- was hoping this book would be more like a Jen Lancaster or David Sedaris. I'll cut her some slack since it's her debut, but I was hoping for more.

I reread Mrs. Dalloway for the reread category in the SBC.

I first read it my senior year of high school, way back in 1999. I liked it a lot then.

This time, I actually started reading it aloud to my baby, which really was helpful. It is difficult reading so going slow by reading it aloud was a good idea. I liked it this reread. I remembered a great deal of it.

The book is set in 1922. It's the day in the life of Clarissa Dalloway, a London high society woman, who is hosting a party. Her story is paralleled by the story of a WWI vet who commits suicide due to the misunderstood PTSD. At the time PTSD was thought of as shell shock, and people didn't receive the help they needed.

I really enjoyed the story and in this case was happy that I had seen the movie first; I'm usually very anti-watching the movie first and I'm actually kinda bummed that I watched the "If I Stay" trailer before reading the book. Anyway... I don't remember the movie that well so this is a great excuse for a rewatch to compare the two (thank you Netflix!). I don't remember Holly Golightly being quite as scandalous in the movie so it will be interesting to see if that's just my memory or if the movie plays that down.

Michael C. Hall did a great job narrating. I love his voice and had a few moments where it brought me back to Dexter and messed with the tone of the novella but overall it was great! Amazing what a good character study and story Capote could put together with so few pages/minutes.

Okay. I'm done rambling now...

You guys, why did I not listen when everyone was raving about this book before?! I'm only on disc 4/11, but I already want to spend all my time in the car listening to it. I love WW2 stories, but I admit that I know very little about the Pacific side of the war, and so this has been really interesting in that way. But more than that, it's just a really good story so far, with the Olympics story and what a crazy childhood Louie had . . . I feel like I'm getting to know all of the guys in the book. I'm enthralled, and so glad that someone here recommended the audiobook, because otherwise I'm not sure when I would've gotten around to reading it. So thanks for that.

So my screen name Jliongrrrl isn't just a homage to Penn State, I am mildly obsessed with lions. I have a lion tattoo and one of those concrete lion statues at my front door. Lyons is actually a family name and I grew up next to a haphazard redneck zoo where I could actually hear their lion roar through my bedroom window. I found this calming. The owner was a distant relative and knew about my love of big cats so he would allow me to bottle feed the babies when they were born (He kept them in the house. Literally. Lions and tigers and bears oh my running around an old farm house. This seemed totally normal to me when I was a kid but is super freaking weird now as I crate my German Shepherd when I leave the house so he doesn't destroy anything but he would allow cubs to run around at all times). I love all animals and grew up on a dairy farm in the middle of nowhere so we saw all kinds of wildlife in addition to being surrounded by cows, chickens, dogs, cats, turkeys etc.
Anyway! I picked up Uganda Be Kidding Me because I'm a fan of Chelsea Handler. I've seen her a few times in person and find her hilarious and I've enjoyed other books of hers. I also am really interested in going on an African Safari. In addition to being mildly obsessed with lions, I also once dated an elephant trainer (and damn near gave my dad a heart attack as I wanted to join the circus to travel with him but this is a whole different story). I would love to go and see animals in their natural habitat. Throw in a cute tour guide in short shorts and I think you have a perfect vacation.

Handler and her crew are often intoxicated in the book. I do enjoy a good cocktail, but don't think this is the way I would travel in Africa. She did stay at some pretty amazing luxury resorts but the one I think I would pick would be Giraffe Manor http://www.thesafaricollection.com/properties/49-giraffe-manor (sorry it's not clicky but seriously check out the pictures and virtual tour). They offer flying and riding safari tours.

I feel like as long as I could take my dog, I would totally live there. DH could visit. Perhaps they need a nurse on site and I could work there for room and board!

The book itself was funny in Handler's usual self indulgent way. She lives a life I will never/would never want to live, but I would totally go on vacation with her!
