So DH and I were on our way to Huntsville on Thursday when my doctor called me....I knew it couldn't be good. He said the results from my quad screen last Monday had come back with an increased chance of the baby having Spina Bifida. He said with me having the ultrasound and her not seeing anything on there that it was probably either a minor defect or a false positive.
I fully understand (from working in the lab) how sensitive screening tests are, and that lots of things can interfere and cause false results. I also feel better from having 2 ultrasounds where neither tech saw anything suspicious. Also, the screen is just for the chance, not for the actual defect. After DH and I googled everything there is to know about the defect and the quad screen, we are hoping that the gestational age is off a few days and that caused a false positive.
I am going to UAB for a target ultrasound as soon as possible, the office hasn't called me back with the appointment date yet. The dr. said from what the u/s tech said and him going back and checking out the pics/measurements that if he had to be the final say right then, he would say false positive. I'm not going to say he wasn't concerned, but he did say he didn't see an urgency for the trip to UAB, but he knew once he told me I would want to get it checked out asap.
Please help us pray that the test is false and the ultrasound is negative! Thanks ladies ![]()
Re: Quad screen results (long)...
I will definitely be praying for you guys.
I do know those tests aren't always accurate. My doctor warned me of that when it was time for us to have those tests. I have heard generally if you don't have any history of it in your family, younger than 35, and healthy then everything is usually fine.
I will! We just stopped through there to have Christmas with Jarrett's dad on our way to Scottsboro. We did go back on Friday, but just for his mom's doctor's appointment. I'll have to plan on a longer trip sometime
I will be praying and thinking of yall.
Our doctor warned us of the high risk of false positives when we got the test done as well. I'm sure that is what it is, considering yall are both young and healthy. Keep us updated.
Lindsay,
One of my friends just had a baby (who is PERFECT) and her Quad screen test showed a marker for Downs.
She had to go to UAB, too, and they did a MUCH better job at explaining the odds and false positives.
Who is your OB (just wondering)?
You'll be in my prayers, though! Keep us up to date!
I go to Dr. Litsey at Lee OB/GYN. I really like him. He did explain the false positives and chances to us before we had the screen, and also said it was completely optional. He told us when we said we were going to do it that he expected everything to come back just fine.
Thanks for all the prayers, y'all...right now I feel like everything will be ok, but you just never know.
Its probably a false positive. I have heard alot of those tests results are like that.
Keep us posted and best of Luck!!!!
