Beta #3

Beta #1 (9/17) = 96
Beta #2 (9/19) = 164
Beta #3 (9/23) = 542

So still doubling within the range, but not making any huge progress.  They want me back on Wednesday for another blood draw as well as an ultrasound.  The nurse said the ultrasound is to "find out where this pregnancy is at, to make sure it's in the uterus".  So it seems like they are also concerned about my numbers being on the lower side of "normal".

I will be 5w5d on Wednesday.  What should I expect to see on the ultrasound?

Re: Beta #3

  • we saw a HB at exactly 6w but it was just barely there. Honestly i couldn't even really see it but the doctor did. I know others that haven't even seen a pole at 6w and gone on to be fine...

  • Your betas sound good to me, but I'm glad that they're going to do an u/s to check things out. I had an u/s when I was 5w5d and we saw the gestational sac and fetal pole, but no hb yet. They had me come back a week later and were able to see the hb then. GL and I hope you're feeling much better on Wednesday.

  • I'm glad they doubled, but I'm sorry they didn't take off like you were hoping. No idea what they will see at 5+5 but I hope that plus your next beta give you good news.

  • Like the others said, you may or may not see a heartbeat, but you should definitely be able to see a yolk sac and probably a fetal pole.

I'm sorry you have to go through beta hell... the betas and first ultrasounds were the worst for me in terms of stress and anxiety. Hopefully, everything looks great on Wednesday! I'll be thinking of you.

  • Your numbers are going up!  That's good :)  I don't think that scheduling an US necessarily means the nurse is concerned (unless she told you she was.)  My doctor told us to make a viabilty ultrasound between 5 1/2 and 7 weeks.  I pushed it as far out as I could (6w5d) because I knew that any time before that could mean that we wouldn't see a heartbeat.

Good Luck and keep us updated!

  • Your numbers are going up and that's a good step.
At my u/s last week at 5w1d I saw the gestational sac, yolk sac and the beginning of the fetal pole. They also confirmed the pg was in the uterus.

    Good luck on Wednesday!

  • Those numbers look good to me.  I had my viability ultrasound at 6 weeks exactly (At my clinic they do them with everyone who needed treatments so hopefully that's your case too... not that the nurse was worried).  I barley say a heartbeat at 6 weeks and it was slow but the doc said that's normal for such early ultrasounds.  Good Luck.

  • Your betas sound good to me!  I had my first u/s at 5w5d and saw a little tiny bean.  The tech saw a slight flicker of a HB but never told me about it but mentioned it to DH when I was getting dressed.

  • Thank you all.  I guess it's just more waiting...

I guess what concerns me is that they usually don't schedule an u/s until you've reached a level of 1,000 or higher.  They told me last week that if my levels didn't start to take off with my beta today, they'd be a bit concerned about the viability of it.  So that combined with her saying today that they want to make sure it's in the uterus concerns me.

  • I think I don't like your Dr's office very much.  Today, you're pregnant and they don't seem to be grasping that concept.  Your numbers are still good and you have no real reason to not expect a perfectly normal pregnancy.  That said, I can't wait for your ultrasound :)

You and me both on everything you just said!
Part of the problem is that I think my assigned nurse must be on vacation or something.  Starting with my first beta last Tuesday, it's been a different nurse calling me each time.  I know my nurse.  I know when she's concerned.  I can't judge these nurses because I don't usually talk to them so I have to take everything they say at face value.
