Eleanor & Park, you guys. (NS)

Holy crap.  No one warned me that I was going to be crying through this whole book!  I started it last night and then I stayed up way too late reading and got through more than half of it.  I wanted to call out of work today to stay home and read, but alas, I couldn't.  I can't wait for lunchtime.  I'm so glad I picked this up!

Re: Eleanor & Park, you guys. (NS)

  • I read it last week!  It totally lived up to the hype!

  • It's so good! I think it's my favorite book of 2013 so far.

  • It is a great book, I think it is in my top 5 favorites this year.

  • I read it last week too!

I thought it was excellent, and I really liked it, but I had a couple of small issues with it.

  • @GilliC, will there be spoilers if I follow that link?  Actually, even if there aren't, I think I might hold off reading your review until after I finish the book.  Which should be by tomorrow.

I walked back from court this morning, even though I could've called for a ride, and I stopped off in the park and sat down and read for 15 minutes.  I wish I had stayed longer, everyone thought I was in court anyway.

But the tears!  I feel like every other page in this book, there is something that makes me cry.  I get it now when you guys are always talking about "all the feels."  This book is the definition of that for me.  Its so happy and so sad and so heartbreaking all at the same time.  I can't even.  I'm going to sit facing the corner in the courtyard at lunch so no one will see me crying while I'm reading my YA book.  LOL!
  • @SusieBW It could be a little spoiler-ish, and there's a real spoiler in the review that's blocked out by the spoiler tags. I would just wait until you're finished if you want to read it.

  • @GilliC - I just read your review and the issues you had did not affect me at all. I thought what you're talking about was done very well and what you're saying didn't even cross my mind and I am a stickler for that sort of thing. *shrugs*

E&P is definitely one of my favorites I've read this year!

I really liked it, but the book and I started off on the wrong foot. In the first chapter:
Once, back in middle school, some guy had tried to give Steve shit ... “They’ll bust out of her stomach like in Aliens,” the guy said.

Aliens opened in July 1986, so if the book begins in August 1986, "back in middle school" would have been before Aliens came out. Even if they were freshmen.
Yeah, I'm anal. It shows the book is great, since I overlooked that beginning! ;)

Jesus...ok you win. I was still wearing My Little Pony hair clips in 1986 and wasn't allowed to watch Alien so that wouldn't have ever occurred to me. I thought you were speaking about something else entirely.

ETA: I mean this a lot less bitchy than it sounds! I mean I'm impressed at your attention to detail.

@GilliC I'm impressed you knew Aliens opened in 1986, evenmoreso in July.

@MrsC7 Haha! Not really! I just really am that anal. I thought, "Aliens? 1986? I thought the original came out around then. *off to IMDB* Oh, it did come out in 1986. ...but they were saying they saw it in middle school. That doesn't make sense!"

@pinkybooklover09 :) I was in My Little Pony hair clips* too! But Aliens is the source of too many nerd culture references, so by middle school it was on my required Geek Cred syllabus (starting with "Game over, man!")

*Not really. My mom wasn't girly enough to buy me cool hair clips. But we did have the ponies. Just not enough to get more than 50% on the pony quiz.

  • @GilliC Are you an editor? Spotting anachronims like that takes a special skill!

  • @MrsC7 My father is a copy editor! I guess I've been trained since birth. Or maybe it's genetic. ;)

  • I took the pony quiz and was astounded by how many I got right.  Apparently that really sunk in to little Julie's brain.  Also, I had My Little Pony clip in hair extensions in various colors.

  • PS: If you asked nicely, I could also sing the entire theme song from the cartoon.  I was a MLP FREAK you guys.

Your review brought up my issues with it too!  Listening to this book was amazing.  I think I'd have like it less if I had read it.

  • I loooved this book. I read it last week and it is still swimming in my head.

That said I sort of kept forgetting it was set in the 80s. I have very little knowledge/memories related to the 80s so any references - like the Aliens thing - didn't really register. I do remember there was something - I forget what it was exactly now - that did make me go "oh yeah, this is in the 80s" but that was about it.

  • I loved it. I am still not ready to be over it and I've already read a whole book after it. sigh
