I have a big front window, and i want to hang up drapes.... Size of rod?

So I have this big front window and I want to hang up drapes, just to frame the window. The length from the wall to wall is about 163 inches. Do I measure the window and purchase the rod or from wall to wall, since I want to frame the window, not cover it. I need a little help here, I purchased the curtains already but I am stuck on which size rod I need and where to buy one. Thanks in advanced for your help... :)

Re: I have a big front window, and i want to hang up drapes.... Size of rod?

  • Rule of thumb is that the windows are completely visible when the curtains are open, so you will want the rod to go from at least the left-most moulding to the right-most moulding.  A window over 13' is really large, and will require a special order curtain rod that will cost you upwards of $100.  Do you have plans to ever use the drapes and close them to cover the window? If not, then you may be able to get away with two smaller rods on each side of the window. However, it may look strange.

You also have the option of making your own curtain rods, which is what I did. Take a look at my blog post if you want more information: http://www.rhodylife.com/2013/03/diy-curtain-rods-brackets.html
