not resolutions, but NewYear's superstitions &/or traditions?

while I suck at making and hence keeping resolutions, I silently make them only to myself...

BUT do you have any New Year's superstitions and/or other traditions?

My Mom insists that we hand a little bundle of green grapes (at least 12 - one for each month of the year) by each entrance/exit to the house.  She says its for properity.  So I've got to remember to buy grapes, take town my raisins for 2008 and hang up new grapes by midnight tomorrow.  Ai!

My stepmom says that we need to have 13 different fruits in a round bowl for prosperity.  I have no idea why it has to be 13.

Also, she says it's good luck to wear polka dots when the clock strikes 12.

Growing up, I was told to jump up high at midnight so that I could grow.  Apparently, it didn't work because I'm only 5'1".

My family throws money (even if they're pennies) at midnight so that in the coming year, money will rain down upon us.

  • For my family I've heard about having coins in your pockets and ring them as the new year arrives, wear things that are round or have polka dots on, plus we prepare a plate of 12 grapes for each person to eat when it strikes midnight and you must eat all of them during that first minute.?

Can you just imagine what we all look like when the clock strikes 12? a bunch of people wearing polka dots shaking their stuff while stuffing their mouths with 12 grapes-its harder when they are the ones with seeds! Then after wards I bang on the pots and pans as I go around the house where all the lights are on and scare the spirits away....its a very tiring way to welcome the new year-but one heck of a fun video to watch later.

    HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!?

  • I heart you guys!

It must be a Filipino thing!  LOL!

Someone who is non-filipino needs to reply soon.  This is almost looking like a crazy-filipino-new-year's-eve post.

  • Okay, not just Filipino.  I'm Mexican, and we do the eating grapes thing too.  Also nuts, walnuts, peanuts are to be eaten.  You have to wear red underwear for love, yellow for friendship, and I forgot what else.  But don't worry it's not just a Filipino thing, us Mexicans are out there too.
  • This is what my friend wrote when I asked her.

wear gold underwear for money and a red bra for love. Eat 12 grapes  and make a wish for every month of the year
  • Whoa those are all crazy! My tradition as a kid was to bang pots & pans & honk the cars horn. Soooo boring compared to you guys!?image
  • LMAO!  J & N are Fili-Mexi-bean-daughters of the american revolution-leprechans (and who-knows-what-else)!  No wonder we're coo-coo!
  • Welp, I do not have anything exciting to add after reading your replies, but I will say that I will wear polka dots and so will Casey tomorrow night.  LOL.  Erik doesn't own anything with Polka Dots so he'll just have to ride our good luck train.

Or maybe I can draw some polka dots on his underwear?  Hmm theres a thought?  LOL.  I'm tired.  I should really go to bed.
