Sippy cup battles!

I've been trying to get the boys off their bottles. They drink juice/water fine out of their sippy cups. I tried switching before, and they would have meltdowns, wanting their milk, but refusing it in a sippy. So I decided to give them more time. I tried switching again yesterday, and there were no meltdowns, they just refused to drink milk. I didn't give them any water or juice, thinking they would get thirsty eventually. When I changed them before their bath, they both had dry diapers, so I gave in and gave them a bottle. Until the bottle, they had only drunk 3-4 oz each all day. I tried again today, and still nothing. I read online to add ovaltine to their milk, but that didn't work. I let them take their sippy to their crib for nap time, and still they won't touch it. They take a sip, realize it's milk and won't drink any more.

I'm at the point where I am not sure what I should do! Should I not give in, but I'm worried about them becoming dehydrated. Also they are picky eaters, so I feel like at least with drinking milk they are getting some nutrients.

Also at this age should they get their milk with their meals, or still afterwards? I've been trying everything. Giving their milk, warm and cold. I even bought new sippys with straws. Are they just conspiring against me, waiting for me to give in????

Re: Sippy cup battles!

  • The sippy cups that worked for us were the Nuby brand - they are kind of like in between sippy cups and bottles.

That said - they still had an evening bottle until a few months ago.

I think adding sugary stuff to their sippy cups might make it harder in the future. They will get there!

  • It's rough, but had to plain go cold turkey and enduring the crying for a couple of days.  It was very hard, but at that point the girls were ok-eaters.  I understand your concerns about their pickiness and are happy with at least the milk they drink.

I'd ask your pedi about your concerns about nutrition and dehydration.  Kids are going to starve themselves...be cranky when hungry yes, but refuse to eat/drink...I don't think so.

    Good luck!

  • Katie uses these sippy cups for milk:

Mighty Grip 10 oz. Straw Cup

She never had any problems with switching and will take either bottle or this cup.  The only think I don't like about it is that there is no cover for the straw, so I have to put a zip lock baggy over it when we go somewhere.  I have tried others and they just don't work like this one does....I think because she gets a good amount when she sips.  This girl LOVES milk so she would take it in a dog dish if she had to-not that I have tried, but you get the idea.

For water, I use a different cup so that she knows it is water and not milk.

  • Can you give them a bowl of cereal with a few cheerios for now? So they are getting their milk intake and then later, maybe bypass the sippy and go straight to cup? It's obvious they like their milk in a bottle:) And looks like you might have to be creative about getting them to like it in new ways. (oh the woes of being a Mom!)

Ella's dr told us to decrease her dairy and add more water to her diet. She at this point only drinks a small amount of milk with her meals.

    HTH!
