Hello out there!
I posted awhile back asking about moving and just wanted to say thanks again for all of the help. We finally made it to Nashville and are getting settled in. I almost didn't think we'd make it because we got stuck in snow storms on the drive from Oregon. In case anyone was wondering, moving cross country in the winter is not fun!
We moved here when I got a position at Vanderbilt. DH is still looking for a job and is starting to get bored with being a stay at home hubby after less than 2 weeks.
Being new in town, I'm sure I'll have lots of questions to ask everyone! My first one is for suggestions for cheap things to do on the weekends, especially for the evenings. In the small town we used to live in, there was nothing to do. Now there's lots to do and we're broke!
Any ideas?
Have a great day!

Thinking of doing cosmetic updates to a dated home? These were our costs.
Hi there Welcome! DH and I moved to Nashville 2 years ago and we absolutely love it here. I will never leave.
We aren't the best at finding cheap things to do (kinda homebodies), but I 2nd a lot of the things the other girls listed.
If you like sushi at all, I'll recommend the first place that was recommended to us when we moved and we are in love with it. (They even give us gift certificates for christmas - I think we spend too much money there! lol) Miyako in Brentwood (off Old hickory blvd and franklin rd - just off I65) is the best sushi ever!
We are trying to get more get togethers going (I think we should do a couple's one maybe!) so you should definitely look out for those and join us
Thanks for some fun ideas! I love that there is such a variety of things to do here, and it all seems so accessible.
And thanks for the sushi tip, DH loves it! We went out for sushi our second night here to Asahi, I think it is in the Belle Meade area. It happened to be Super Bowl Sunday so the place was empty and we had a nice time talking to the owners.
Welcome! We've been here for just over 2 years and we love it here.
Check out the Nashville Scene and the Nashville Rage (free papers). They always have listings of weekend activities like festivals, concerts, events, etc. We mainly like to try new restaurants around town on the weekends. We rarely go out downtown (even though we live right there. lol). If you like music, then you'll enjoy the many small clubs downtown with live music - all genres too, not just country. Do you like hockey? Preds tickets are always available and they're fun. Once spring rolls around, the Percy Warner Parks are a great place to spend a weekend afternoon. Also, Cheekwood Botanical Gardens.
Cheap stuff: like previous mentioned, there's Radnor Lake, Shelby Bottoms (great easy bike), Edwin and Percy Warner parks. Centennial park is fun of walks, feeding duckies, etc.
You can always catch inexpensive to free Writer's Nights or other small musical performers scattered all around town. Check the aforementioned Nashville Scene and Rage.
Now that you work at Vandy, you can stay plugged into the network of speakers, concerts and such going on at Vandy. Usually tickets are reduced price for staff, sometimes free. Blair school has lots of performances and recitals, many of which are free. On the same music strain, Nashville Symphony frequently has last minute (like day of) tickets for drastically reduced price (I think it's about $5-10, I could be wrong though)
And the season coming up in about March and onward is prime outdoor festival time. Pridefest, Earth Day, I think there was an international festival too at some point, craft fairs, etc. etc.
hpjones - I'm sure we work right near each other. I'm on campus (Kirkland Hall) working in development and alumni relations.
You're in a great location! Have you eaten at Grins Cafe yet? It's in the Jewish Center right next to the SLC. They have great salads and wraps. You should check it out!
Maybe I should create a post to try and get the Vandy girls together for lunch sometime?
