? about pg & acid reflux

I have had wicked acid reflux for the last few months (ah the joys of pregnancy :) and last night I was up most of the night with it (ugh).  My Dr. told me to take Zantac, but it only helps sometimes and it did me no good last night.

does anyone have any advice on how to deal with acid reflux during pg???  home remedies?  food to avoid?  any thoughts would be helpful.  thanks!

Re: ? about pg & acid reflux

  • Near the end of my pg, I would sleep nearly sitting up.  It helped with my acid reflux.  I also ate rolaids like they were candy.  It goes away as soon as their born!  Not that that news does much for you now. . . .

    Good luck!

  • Mylanta Supreme in Cherry.  I kept a bottle on the nightstand and one on the coffee table, I used it so often.
  • I had the most success with avoiding foods that gave it to me.  It's been pretty manageable the last fews months.  For me, I need to avoid all citrus, peanut butter, and yogurt.  Chocolate and coffee can sometimes cause it for me too but i haven't completed eliminated it out of my diet.  Sometime red sauce or tomato based things will be an issue, but not often enough to eliminate.  I was eating Tums like it was a hobby when it first started.  Good luck.
  • I 2nd the Tums.  I have a bottle at my desk and one at home and as soon as I feel the slightest acid feeling, I take some.  It's a rare day when I don't take any.  So, for the most part I can head it off.  As for food, I'm at a loss with that...some days it seems like the better I eat, the worse it is.

  • thanks for the responses ladies!   I will give those a try.  I don't function well at work without sleep so I need to try something.

  • I had acid reflux prior to pregnancy and during pregnancy and after pregnancy and its NO FUN ;-)  If you are taking the Zantac 75 just when you feel reflux coming on or you know you are gonna eat something greasy it won't work.  Its something you are supposed to take each day.  Avoid things like tomato sauce, oranges, things that are acidic.  Also, avoid greasey food.  Try not to lay down right after you eat.  Do not eat until you are stuffed.  Try and eat 5 lighter meals a day.  For me though, no matter what I did during the the end of my second tri and begining of my third, y acid reflux was acting up all the time.  When the baby dropped, I did get some relief.  GOOD LUCK hun and I hope you get some relief soon.
  • Oh I sure don't miss that part of pregnancy!  I had it severely from 16 weeks until I delivered.  I took Zantac and Tums both by the handful and there were still times when nothing helped.  I did find that avoiding spicy foods, caffeine, and anything with tomato or tomato sauce helped.  Milk helpd, but I hated drinking it so I ate ice cream!  Staying upright as much as possible helped some, but I found that due to the position of one of the babies even this didn't help much because she was pushing on my stomach.

Good luck! Sorry I don't have any better advice to offer, but I do feel your pain!

  • I had it SO bad with Ryan.. It was horrible. The dr. told me that pretty much nothing would help. Lovely! I am guessing you have a baby with a full head of hair :)
  • I haven't had too much of a problem during my pregnancy (yet) *knock on wood* but I've had acid reflux for years. Some of my trigger foods are: items with processed sugar (cake, cookies, pies, chocolate, etc.), yogurt, highly acidic foods (tomatoes, oranges, etc.), peppers, onions, garlic, coffee, red meat, anything fried or greasy, white bread.... and yes, even water.

    Good times.

Start to pay close attention to what you're eating when it acts up the most. I always carry tums in my purse & have a bottle on the coffee table at home. I pop a couple as soon as I feel it coming on. Like PPs said, stop eating before you're stuffed, don't lay down after eating, sleep propped up with a couple extra pillows.

  • I had it worse with my first pregnancy, but I found Tums and Pepcid helped.

I'm sorry you've got it.  It's NOT fun!
