would you leave the oven on & go out?

Would you leave two potatoes in your oven and put it up to 500degrees and go out?

I know it almost sounds like a dumb question, but If I make 2 sweet potatoes, they have to cook for 2hrs at 500degrees to our liking...

I like to go walking w/the baby after work...Time doesnt allow for me to both unless I leave the oven on when i go out....

Would you ????? or do you think it poses to much of a risk?

Re: would you leave the oven on & go out?

  • If I'm just going out to walk down the street w/ Anthony or play outside...yes.

Not if I'm going to far away from home though.

  • it would be for about an hour walk down to the beach and back....???
  • I am a "nervous nelly" (that's putting it lightly) so I probably wouldn't.

  • I wouldn't get in my car and go somewhere with the oven on.  No, especially not with the oven set that high.  I have a tip for you though that I use when I make potatoes--stick them with a fork a few times, stick them in the microwave for 10-15 minutes, then put them in the oven for 20-30 minutes.  They cook so much faster this way, because the microwave gets them nice and soft.
  • I've put a zucchini bread in the oven and ran out quick to the grocery store (there & back in about 20 min) but that was only at about 350 degrees - the 500 temp would make me nervous, but I've never put my oven on that high.

Then again, I've left the oven on overnight by accident.

Also, I have an electric one.  I don't know much about gas ovens, but that might make me even more nervous.  I know they are great but the fact that there is a flame scares me.Smile

  • Absolutely, I do it all the time.
  • Nope!  I'm too paranoid.
  • I would.

Side story - When my BIL and his wife left for the honeymoon they made something in the oven that morning and left the oven on without realizing it.  When they came back and walked into a boiling hot house they freaked because the oven had been on for a week!  Luckily the place didn't catch fire!

  • If i was walking up and down the street, yes, and could see the house.  An hour walk, no way.
  • I wouldn't.

You just never know what could happen, and I would hate to risk something happening, I try and pre cook/prepare things or cook things that take long like that on the weekends. But I can be a worry wart about things like that

  • I would, but i'd alter my outing to go around the block a few times, or just take time to play outside in the yard.  I wouldn't want to be that far away and on foot.  That to me is worse than hopping in the car to the grocery store for 30 mins tops...which i've contemplated and couldn't bring myself to doing....  especially with an oven at 500 degrees....
  • We've left the oven on (empty) all day before and even once overnight.  If you've cooked the potatoes that way before and know that it takes two hours at 500 degrees - then yes, I would go for a walk and leave the oven on.  However - it sounds like a long time and a very high temp for potatoes - but then again I don't usually bake mine whole like that ever.
  • I would only if I was walking around the block or playing outside. The high temp makes me nervous.

Side note- I always cook my sweet pot. in the microwave. Peirce with a fork - micro for 5 minutes then turn over & micro for another 5 minutes. They come out nice & soft.

  • I never would leave the oven on if I wasn't in the house. I have a massive fear of fire (my mom caught many a stove/oven on fire when I was little).
  • a 500 degree oven- NOPE

    350 degree oven- No Problem.

  • No way.  In this situation I wouldn't.
  • I use the set ahead option, so the oven is preheated right when I need it or I have left things with the shut off too.  So, I would say go for it.
  • personally, I wouldn't.  But then again, I'm a little paranoid :)  because I also wouldn't run the dryer when I'm not home, and I unplug appliances (toaster, etc) when not in use.  I also live in an old house, so I worry about having older wiring.  I know a lot of people that would leave it on without thinking twice about it.

  • Ok, after reading the responses, I think I'm gonna just lower it to 350 while I'm out and then up the temp when I get home.

    Thanks for all your opinions...

  • TIP take a metal skewer and stick it thru the center of the potatoe. The metal heats up the center to make it cook faster. I have this device made for potatoes and it has four metal prongs that I just pierce 4 potatoes on and it cooks them fast. I got them from my mom years ago not sure where you can find one.

for now the skewers should help... otherwise yes if it was just for a walk around

  • Yes. I've done that. As long as I'm not going far..
