Kid friendly+inexpensive B&B recommendations in Key West?

Overall, Is Key West kid friendly ?  Which B&B did you stay at?  We are thinking about going to KeyWest in September.  DD will be one at the time.  We were thinking of a B&B but not sure if it would just be best to stay at a hotel?  TIA

Re: Kid friendly+inexpensive B&B recommendations in Key West?

  • I went to Key West a couple years ago on my "babymoon." I would probably return with my son in tow, but be aware that part of Key West is definitely a party town with lots of bars. I'm not familar with any of the B&Bs in the area, but my advice is to read their policies prior to making a reservation because many B&Bs do not allow children.

You might want to post this question on the South Florida board. Key West is a good 8 hour drive from Central Florida. :)

  • I'm not trying to be mean or snarky, but GOOD LUCK finding someplace. My best friend was just trying to find someplace to stay down there with her baby and her husband for a little summer vacation and they could hardly find anything.

The city itself is kid/baby friendly, lots of places to walk with a stroller, and plenty of places to eat that won't mind kids.

My friend said a lot of places jsut would not accept children under 16 years old. She said a few of the bigger hotels accepted babies, but those are a little farther off the street usually and she wanted the B&B type feel of a place.

I stayed at the Eden House and it was great. www.edenhouse.com and *think* they'd accept kids and they have suites available...my friend just didn't want to spend the $$ on that place for a bigger room.

    Hope that helps!!

  • I personally don't think that Key West is really kid friendly. Again, this is just my opinion. That being said, there are lots of people that take their kids down there. My husband and I have been going for several years and would really like to try to move down there eventually. It just seems to me like there isn't a whole lot for the kids to do. Sure, there is the Sunset Festival at Mallory Square but there are so many people....I would be nervous taking a kid in there. Other than that, there are museums but nothing really for a kid to do. It's not like you can take them to a nice beach during the day to play....there aren't any. Key West isn't known for their beaches. ?Key West is really just one big coral reef so there isn't a good beach. ?It's more of a party scene. ?Again, there is stuff to do during the day without the partying....but I don't think it's really geared towards kids. ?It's an adult vacation.

If I were you, I would look more towards one of the other keys. ?There are nicer beaches and they aren't as "grown up" as Key West was.?

  • I think the only way I would go to Key west with my son is if I brought a babysitter along. I really love the nightlife that Key West has to offer. To me that is the best thing about going there. Fat Tuesdays, Irish Kevins, Fogarty's and Ricks are all so much fun and definitly NOT kid friendly. There are some interesting characters down there, and lots of in and out traffic with the cruise ships in and out everyday.

If you are looking for a "beach" vacation that is kid friendly..look into going to somewhere on the gulf coast. There are lots of little beach towns that are full of activities that are geared towards families with kids.(go-carts, putt-putt, arcades, movie theaters..ect..) The beaches in Key West are just so-so.

  • We stayed at the Eden House in Key West on our honeymoon and it was fantastic!! As far as I know it was the lowest rates in the area and it was really close to Duval Street (the main street with all the restaurants/bars/attractions). It's very small so the owner comes out and interacts with the families staying there and everything. They're on the web at edenhouse.com.
  • We honeymooned in Key West and returned for our first anniversary. There is plenty of stuff to do during the day - lots of history, museums, walking tours, etc. It's not really a beach town - but an hour away there are GORGEOUS beaches at Bahia Honda Park.

We've used Center Court - they have many houses they rent out - different prices and sizes. We stayed in a house (each floor was a independant condo) and we had a full kitchen with supplies, king size bed, living room, bathroom and balcony with grill and private jacuzzi. It also had a swimming pool. It wasn't a hotel with a restuarant on site, but it was great for us.
