Best Restaurants in St. Louis?

Hello!  I'm a WI nestie who will be visiting St. Louis with DH in a few weeks.  I would love recommendations on restaurants we must eat at.  Thanks!!

Re: Best Restaurants in St. Louis?

  • There are so many!  I hope you're coming for a month!  A great source for restaurant info:  www.saucemagazine.com.

My favorites:  for Italian, you've got to try someplace on The Hill (St. Louis's Italian neighborhood).  For fancy/expensive, Gitto's and Dominic's are both excellent.  For mid-range, I love Lorenzo's.  For casual, I think Cunetto's and Favazza's are your best bets.

For steaks, IMO you can't beat the Sidney Street Cafe.  Yum.  Their food is amazing, as is the atmosphere.  No menus--the wait staff has the selections memorized and recites them to you.

Other great places I'd recommend:  1111 Mississippi, Trattoria Marcella, Vin de Set, Niche

For some fun, casual ideas (lunch or dinner--doesn't matter), you should try Pappy's BBQ (near SLU's campus), Fountain on Locust (I've only had ice cream here--it's great), Imo's Pizza (a St. Louis original), Ted Drewes Frozen Custard, Crown Candy Kitchen (lunch and ice cream--no dinner), O'Connell's pub (great burgers).

Seriously, I could go on forever.

  • I also should have added The Cupcakery (duh... cupcakes)!  And there's some great Mexican in town:  Tortillaria, Arcelia's and Pueblo Solis are very popular (and good), but for "authentic" Mexican, I'd try some of the places on Cherokee Street.
  • Lynn - I'm learning so much from your reply!  I never knew that the place to go for authentic Mexican was Cherokee Street!  Where have I been?!

I second a lot of her recommendations - Sidney Street, Eleven Eleven, Vin de Set, and I like the novelty places like Imo's and Ted Drewes too just since they are St. Louis traditions.

  • I'm learning a lot, too, like Christie is my friend from high school! Hi Christie!

You definitely have to go to Imo's... we were just in town last weekend and made it a priority. We even brought back a couple bottles of Imo's Italian dressing... mmmm....

  • Great Steak house is also Citizen Kane's in Kirkwood. Amazing steaks and great wine menu.

     LOL!  Hi Katy!

  • You can try Imo's, but unless you grew up on it, you have a  99% chance of hating it.

The PP is right about the hill.  There are plenty of very tasty restaurants (I recommend just about any of the ones listed at http://www.stlouisoriginals.com/), but there's not much food-wise that's local to STL (except that nasty pizza, and Toasted Ravioli, which is now available nationally in some chains).

Here's another vote for Sidney Street Cafe. It's expensive but very very very good. Blueberry Hill has great burgers and pop culture displays that are really cool. If the weather is nice, try the Boathouse in Forest Park. It's on a lake and it's a nice way to spend an afternoon. Imo's.... give it a try but you either love it or hate it. I love it!

  • I'm in the minority here... I don't think the Italian restaurants on the Hill are that great.  It's more the novelty of it.  However, I do very much enjoy Amighetti's on the hill for their sandwiches and gelato.  On Saturday afternoons there is a band of older men playing like the xylephone (sp.) which cracks me up.

Vin De Set is my favorite for fine dining at a pretty reasonable cost.  The roof top deck is fantastic.

Toasted ravioli and Ted Drew's are musts.  Also, some gooey butter cake.

If you head to the burbs, I second Citizen Kane's in Kirkwood.  Another Kirkwood favorite is Cafe Provencal.  French restaurant that's not snooty at all.  Very reasonable - you can get three courses for $28 and it's delicious.

  • As some one who lived in St. Louis for a few years (a non-native), I have to second the pp that said you're likely to hate Imo's pizza.  It's like a thin layer of ketchup on a saltine cracker.  Absolutely the worst pizza I've ever had in a large city.
