Can tomatoes stand the cold?

The weather has dropped in zone 7 to around 40-50 degrees.  I have several small-medium sized tomatoes hanging out.  Will they be ok or should I start picking them?  They're all green so I was wanting them to hang out on the plant a little longer.

Re: Can tomatoes stand the cold?

  • I'm not sure, but I think tomatoes are ok right up until frost. Here in zone 5, 50 degrees isn't cold. Chilly, perhaps, but not cold. In fact, I think that's what the temperature was like when I first planted mine outside this year.
  • It's 35 degrees here this morning and the tomato plant that won't die is still looking fine and the tomatoes are okay.  I'd say let them hang out longer.

  • i just picked my last tomatoes today because we are expected a hard frost overnight. you can always cover them up w a sheet if its supposed to be really cold at night.?
  • cover during a hard frost and you should be ok.

  • Tomatoes take longer to ripen in cold weather, so it will be slow going if you're expecting them to turn red.  Cover them until the first hard frost and collect all you can get.
