Has anyone ever painted a peice of furniture?
We have this ugly coffee table that DH is just in love with...his parents gave it to us back when we had an empty apartment and just needed anything. He likes it so much because its the kind that the top can raise up so its like table height when you're sitting on the couch. Well, since we're in our house and finally decorating, all our other furniture in that room is black, then we have this big ugly wood coffee table. Has anyone ever painted any furniture? Do you think I could paint this black and make it look presentable? It is not a quality piece...I'm pretty sure its not even real wood.

I love to paint furniture! Most of ours is wood, so I'm not sure I've ever painted 'pressed wood'--that one looks like you could paint it just fine though! A little sandpaper to 'rough up' the finish--if you have one of those electric sanders you'll be a happy camper. There is also some stuff that you put on and it eats at the finish--not sure what it's called but the Lowes peeps will
Then paint away with a GOOD brush or a nice foam roller. I like a vintagey look, so I always sand a bit of it back off--does that make sense?
Oh and take the top off so you don't get any paint in the hardware. Let me know if you want any more tips, I'm no expert but I have a thing for furniture--it's almost a sickness
You can definitely paint that black. The stuff that Shelley was talking about that eats varnish is called stripper. I like Kilnz as a good primer for projects. Make sure if you get latex (water based) paint that you also get a water based primer NOT oil based or you'll have a very hard time getting the paint to stick.
I'd probably put some kind of polyurethane sealer over the top when you're done to try to help protect it from water that might come from glasses put on it etc.
I read this blog, http://betterafter.blogspot.com/, and she posts all sorts of different furniture redos. You could probably go to many of the original sites and get more tips.
