When do LO's start school??
We have our first baby, 2 months old this week. Since we are rather new to Greenwood and things are very different here than what we are used to in CA, I was wondering 2 things:
1) when do children first start public school here, what age?? when do you start looking into this and enroll them, etc?
2) how do you go about finding out which schools your child would attend based on where you live? We live in a new housing development so I have no idea.
Re: When do LO's start school??
Children usually have to be five by August 1 to enroll for that year. You can petition for early enrollment if you believe they are ready. You can start signing them up in January (I believe) at their home school.
If you don't know where your child will attend you can call the school coorporation. In Johnson County, you are either in Center Grove School Coorp. Greenwood School Coorp, Whiteland, Franklin Community. It all depends on where you live. If you call one school they are likely to tell you what township you attend and then all you have to do is call that township.
Our son was born 12/2/09, so I guess he won't start school until he is officially 5 years old for the Aug 2015 term then. He would be starting Kindergarten then, correct? Do they go to preschool before this, like a public preschool or do they only attend preschool if you send them to a private paid school??
Also, we live in Greenwood and are in Clark Pleasant township I believe.
Sorry for so many questions, this is our first child and for some reason this whole school thing has me confused. Any Mommies who have been through all of this and have any info I would so appreciate.
Yes he'd be 5 and a half-ish when he starts school or 2015, I was born in 12/1979 and started in 1985. As far as I know preschool is left up to the parent, my ktg friend teacher say she can tell the kids who have not been to preschool. I know Greenwood Christian Church has a daycare and you pay extra for the preschool program.
If you are in Clark-Pleasant that should be Whiteland Schools, I think they have several elementary schools. Call to make sure, here's their website: http://www.cpcsc.k12.in.us/ if that's the right district ask about enrollment. We live in Pleasant twp. and feed into Greenwood schools but get mailings for Whiteland usually in the spring and fall.
Don't be afraid to venture to the IN Bump, it's much more active there!
Education is quite different here than in California
1) It depends on the school district but most often they have to be 5 before Sept. 1st to start kindergarten. I'm a kindergarten teacher and we are enrolling now for the fall. If you qualify financially for HeadStart then that starts at age 3.
2) Go on the department of education website.
