Has anyone laid their own sod?

If you have, can you tell me about the process you followed?  Thanks! :)

Re: Has anyone laid their own sod?

  • I did about 5 weeks ago and it was a success!  My bff and I did it one day on a whim.  We got sod from Home depot and some nutrient rich soil.  It was pretty effortless but the one thing you MUST do that I didnt do enough of at first was water water water!!  I have a few dead spots that are slowly growing back.  Also, dont walk on it sit on it or allow your dog on it for at least six weeks (so the guy at home depot told us).  We havent cut it yet but it's really green and really long so we must have done something right!  i also read online that you shouldnt water between the hours of 10-3.  I got one of those attachments that you just screw on the hose and place on the lawn and let it water for awhile.   It works great!
  • I lightyly watered the ground where the sod was going to go to help it "stick" bettter.

Laid the sod with tightly together.

Rented a roller thing that you fill with water, rolled over the yard .

Watered well twice a day for a week, then once a day in the am for the next two weeks.

  • Thanks for the info, ladies.  Did you till the soil before you laid the sod?

Tilling the soil will help the sod root, especially if you don't do the roller part, but remember not to leave the area lumpy- it has to be flat.

The most critical thing your new sod lawn will need is WATER. You could sod your driveway successfully if you watered it every day.

Unless the area is very small, I would consider laying sod to be a physically demanding task. I'm quite surprised that someone would describe it as "effortless".
