DH and I are pretty handy when it comes to projects, and FIL has been a gardener at our local legislature for 30 years, so we can defintely do all the work itself, but we're clueless when it comes to the planning and design. We bought a new house in a new community backing onto a busy street. Fencing is done as is rough grade, but nothing else. The back yard is 2000 sq ft. Is it worth it for around $700 to have a landscape designer make us up a plan (about 3 hours of work they quote)? Or would you just find pictures of what you like and wing it?

I agree with pp. My parents just had a landscape designer redo their front and patio gardens. It looks amazing and is much better suited for drought-tolerant plants and less watering. When they moved into this house nearly 20 years ago, they planted as they wanted. As it turns out, one of the trees they planted should have been contained in a pot and got into their sewer lines.
On the other hand, if your FIL has been working in the area with the same area and knows the plants and trees that grow well in your area, a few extra hours of work might be worth rewarding yourself with a massage after the work is done.
What about drawing the plans up yourself, then having the landscape architect review your plan? That might be the best of both options.
That will be the best $700 you ever spend.
They will sit down with you to discuss what you want in terms of living space, maintenance, views, etc. and come up with 2-3 plans.
You don't have to implement a plan all at once, but it's invaluable to have one.

They will give you a detailed plan down to the number of each type of plant to use.
I've never had a yard done so I can't help with pricing.

I'm new to this board! Hi!
Just wanted to tell you that my hubby is a landscape designer and he does side projects for like $500 a home. But it takes him WAY longer than 3 hours per home. But these were friends or friends of friends. They were so happy afterwards and were thankful they actually paid for it to be done. I would TOTALLY recommend you look into hiring one. But you might want to find out through word of mouth in your area and see if someone knows someone that could maybe hook you up! Good luck.
I might be too late, but OMG, yes, shop around! That rate is highway robbery!
We paid $70 for a plan. The lady spent about an hour walking around the yard and gave us three detailed plans - front, back and way back yards. Names and numbers of plants, suggestions for new paths, everything your guy is promising you for $700. Shop around.

Thinking of doing cosmetic updates to a dated home? These were our costs.
OMG, $70 for a landscape plan??! The designer gave you not one but THREE detailed plans? After a one hour site survey? I don't even know how that's possible. Even for a small yard, it takes me at least one hour to measure, photograph, and sketch a rough. Then I wonder how long the designer spent at her drafting table, rendering THREE plans? My gosh- that would be... what, one or two dollars an hour, by my figuring.
I'm a working Landscape Designer and $70 doesn't even cover my first hour, and my rates are competetive. A detailed plan takes conservatively several hours to render. I'm blown away by the range of prices.
