Best way to prep soil before planting a bed
I am very new to gardening, so please bear with me. 2 years ago we ripped up some rose bushes from the side of our deck. I now want to extend the bed a little bit and put in a perennial garden.
Our soil is pretty sandy, so I'm not sure of the best way to prep it. Do i just buy a bunch of topsoil and some compost and mix it together? Do I have to wait a certain amount of time before planting?

Ditto on the soil test.
And ask for one with micronutrient analysis, not just the macronutrients. They will give you a detailed plan of what/how much to add to make your soil better.
Oh boy. I think you both have convinced me that I am NOT ready to become a gardner! Yikes!
So if I chose not to go that route, what would be the next best way to prep the soil?
The soil test is really no big deal.
And if for nothing else, you need to know your soil's pH. For example, I live in an area with alkaline soil. Alkaline soil will stunt the growth or outright kill some plants. It wouldn't matter how much compost or fertilizer I put in my soil; it would still be alkaline and stuff still wouldn't grow.
The soil test told me what to buy and how much to put down--it's so easy! You don't have to guess, and you won't under/over treat.
Just do it!
You could polp in some compost & see how things go...
