Hydrangea Help

I have 5 Hydrangea's planted on the west side of my house. There are also two trees on this side of the house. So they get a little afternnon sunlight and a mix of mostly shade and a little bit of sun all day.

I just planted them (less than a month ago) and the three in the middle are doing fine, but the two on the outside are almost dead. I water them almost everyday. I use a miracle grow on them once a week.

Any ideas why these two aren't taking like the other three? (no animals peeing/messing with them) (soil is not clay, it's a nice mix of nomal soil and top soil)

Re: Hydrangea Help

  • Once a week is way overkill for miracle grow.  Even the box usually says once every 2 weeks, but most people will tell you maybe 2/year.

By almost dead you mean wilty, brown or they have lost their leaves?

  • I'm guessing that you're not watering deeply enough.  You don't need to water them every day.  Set out a sprinkler or just leave the hose on at a trickle for 30 min.

I also wouldn't be fertilizing that much either.

  • What specific type of Hydrangea? The Oak Leaf Hydrangea is much more sensitive to over-watering than the other varieties, for example.

Considering it is the end two plants only, make sure conditions are the same for all five plants-- the two on the ends getting more or less sun? Too much shade can be a problem for Hydrangeas. Or the converse: are they being exposed to too much afternoon sun? Hydrangeas prefer morning sun and afternoon shade.

Or, are they getting too much wind? Wind can quickly dry out Hydrangea leaves and overly stress the plants. The outer plants would naturally be exposed to the elements more.

  • hmm... ok so the mirical grow lied to me... it said to use every 7 days, ok check won't use mirical grow as often.

Thanks for all the info, I will look into everything. Hopefully I can figure something out. I have planted all kinds of other things, and the hydrangea's are the only thing i'm having trouble with.

  • What's your soil pH?  Hydrangeas like it on the acid side.  An alkaline pH along with conditions the other pps mentioned could doom those plants.
