Japanese Beetles?

Any tips on how to get rid of Japanese Beetles? I know there are products like Seven that are made to kill them, but I don't really want to use chemicals, especially in my veggie garden.

I have just been squirting them with a mix of dish soap and water and then picking them off the plants and putting them in a jar of the same but I'm curious if there is an easier way that any of you have tried that workd for you that would keep them off my plants all together.

 Thanks for any advice!

Re: Japanese Beetles?

  • I used the hanging bag trap. They're somewhat controversial because some people think that the bags attract more beetles to the yard, but that was not the case for me. I found it very effective and pesticide free. You want to hang it in an area away from your problem area though to draw them away just in case. Home Depot and Lowe's both carry them. WalMart does too.

  • You can prevent them for next year by putting down Milky Spore. It will get rid of the grubs without the use of chemicals.
  • I use the bags. They take time to work, but basically I have had fewer and fewer beetles each year.
  • Ditto the traps.  You'll be amazed at how many beetles they catch.

  • The traps are great, that's what we always used.
