Good Bad & Ugly

Hi Nesties,

I have learned to hate the snow of the midwest and have seriously considered moving. What can you tell me about life in Florida: the good, bad & ugly!

Re: Good Bad & Ugly

  • You posted this on the Los Angeles board too, didn't you?

Having lived in both places, I say go for Los Angeles! :)

  • I forgot you wanted details...

The Good: It doesn't snow, the beaches are nice, the ocean is warm and nice to swim in, it's multicultural, lots of things to do, lots of vacation spots nearby...

The Bad: The heat and humidity are pretty unbearable certain times of the year, hurricanes suck when they come, there aren't really any distinct "seasons" to experience, there are a lot of elder people in some areas, the cost of living is high, the touristy/cool areas can be very pricey to enjoy...

The Ugly:  Eh nothing major comes to mind.

  • The Good: No snow, close to beaches, it doesn't get cold for more than few days at a time (and by cold I mean like 60 degree weather, and that's usually once the sun goes down)

The Bad: Unpredictable weather (especially in the summer, lots of rain storms, but they are usually over with rather quicky), hurricanes, very high cost of living (you don't get much for your money here), conjestion (there are a lot of people/cars/traffic)

The Ugly: High crime, which really shocked me when I moved down here. I was surprised how frequent and generally more violent it was. It just wasn't what I was used to.

  • Good- Food, culture, beach, snow-free (gives you something to travel for), you're always finding new things so you never really get bored- there's always something going on, the Miami Heat are another reason to move here :)

Bad- Heat but then again, we do have AC units in Florida. It's a tad pricey but you'll learn you're way around financially- you just have to ask around.

Ugly- I guess there are some ugly parts of town but 9 out of 10 times- you'll never be going through them.

I have to disagree with PP when she says that there's a lot of crime. There's just as much here as there is anywhere else. Of course we lock our doors and we don't leave our purse in the car but, honestly if you live in a decent neighborhood, avoid bad neighborhoods, and don't walk around with an "I'm easy to rob" sticker on your forehead- you'll be fine. Also, Hurricanes are not that bad! You know when they're coming- you just have to always be prepared with water and all the essentials so you don't have to go out last minute. Other than boarding your windows hurricane's are like Florida's snow days!

Having lived in Miami my entire life, there's really nowhere I've been that's quite like it. I vote Florida (south FL) :)
