Salvageable or toast? PIP

We planted this tree in the spring.  It was looking pretty good until about a week ago and now it's turning brown on us.  The browning is mostly concentrated to one side on the bottom and at the tips of the branches. All the needles and new growth came off the top, too. I'm not sure if it's done for once it starts turning brown or if there is a way to salvage it.  We did get the warranty form the nursery, so we can return it, but I would prefer not to dig it up and haul it back if we can keep it alive.  I would also prefer to not plant a tree at this time of the year.  So WDYT b/c I have no clue about this sort of thing.

PS- Sorry for the bluriness in some of the pictures, I was trying to keep the flash off so you could see the actual colors.

  • Where are you located?

In OK, we are experiencing a lot of conifers dying because of some kind of boring beetle. The same kind of thing is happening in other parts of the country. You might look and see if that's the problem.

Also, did the weather change drastically? Heavy rains/not enough rain, unseasonably cool temps/unreasonably hot temps?

  • It looks like insect damage--fairly common to conifers planted near buildings (mite heaven).  I can't really tell from the picture, but it looks like your tree is near your house.  If that is your house, your tree is TOO near your house.  Those babies get pretty big, you know.

I would suggest getting your money for the tree and planting a non-evergreen shrub or small tree in the spot.

Kind of looks like what happens when sprinkler irrigation keeps hitting it. Could that be a factor?

  • I had been trying to water just the base and roots, actually lifting the branches up to do so.  However, H prefers to use a sprinkler so I will ask him if he had been using one.

Oh, and I am SW Ohio.  Not too many drastic changes lately- heat and humidity have been way up and less rainfall, but that's typical for around here.

If water could be hitting the foliage from the sprinkler, what time of day and for how long would it happen?

Is that another dead plant next to it?

  • If water would be hitting it, it would be after the sun drops behind the trees, in the picture you are facing south, left side is east, right side is west.  I talked to him and he did use a sprinkler on the side of the house for one night and said he left it on for about 40 min.

  • Yes, that is a dead plant behind it.  It was a Golden Mop, but my dog loved to pee on it, which is why I am thinking it bit the dust.  The other plants are doing well- so problems are confined to the evergreens.
