This our first year growing anything edible. A few days ago DH found a "caterpiller" on one of the pepper plants. I took a look and it was bright green. Hmm, no, google images confirms this is not a caterpiller at all. So I tell DH we need to get the hornworms off the plants - and holy crap they're everywhere!
So I go out this morning and DH is removing one. He puts in a plastic container and drops in one of the ruined peppers, which Mr. Hornworm proptly curled up in and went to sleep and some sticks. I asked DH what he's doing with the worm and he says "I want to see if it will turn into a moth"
Oh dear. Now we're keeping hornworms as pets.

Re: DH is a bug sympathizer
That made me LOL
Hornworms are icky, last year I had a devil of a time getting rid of them.

Let him keep it and see what it turns into. He might change his mind!
When I was younger (early teen years) I found that we had TONS of ladybug larvae in the back lots of our house (tall Johnson grass, very field-like) and so I kept some and they cocooned into some very large, healthy ladybugs, which I in turn released into the wild. It was very cool to see. I think I was in Bio at the time so it kind of went along with the whole bug-hunt project. At least mine turned into something both pretty and beneficial
