TrueGreen?

So our yard is full of rocks and crab grass but no real grass. We moved in February (new construction) and they only seeded and strawed. True Green came by (talked with my husband as I wasn't home) and stated they could come and treat the soil, fertilize, and kill crab grass for $62/treatment (8 treatments in all), the first one being $42. They said we have about 9,000 square feet. Is this something you all would recommend? I'm dying to have grass like the rest of the people in our neighborhood but ours currenly look like a desert...Thanks.

Re: TrueGreen?

  • You can do it yourself if you are willing to wait.  Fertilize in the fall to help the grass overwinter and then use a fertilizer/pre-emergent crab grass killer in the spring.
  • I watch the TruGreen guys when they come to my neighbor's yard--they barely spend 5 minutes as they literally run with the spreader.

It will be cheaper (and you'll get better results) if you do it yourself.

Treat the soil for what? And if you have no grass, fertilize what?

Killing the crabgrass is pointless and a waste of $ because it will die on it's own. As the pp said, crabgrass is prevented by applying per-emergent herbicides in the spring.

What does it say on the written estimate/proposal?

  • It sounds to me like you need someone to plant grass or re-sod the lawn and not just kill the weeds that are there.  If their estimate doesn't include that, I definitely would not use them.

This late in the season, I wouldn't worry about treating all of the weeds because like a PP said they will die soon anyway.

  • We used TrueGreen this year, run, fast!  They suck, our yard has more weeds now then it did before they came.  We are now getting a free treatment because it looks so bad.
