End of tomato season

First year growing veggies, so we're learning as we go. Our tomato plant is still flowering, but we should not expect that we will be getting any further edible fruit correct? The last two tomatoes never reached a decent size before turning. I'm ready to pull it to make way for some fall veggies, but DH is holding out hope. We're in GA (zone 7).

Re: End of tomato season

  • I live in zone 5 and I was still getting tomatoes in November last year.

If your fruit isn't getting big, try some vegetable fertilizer--I'd ask at my local garden shop for recommendations.

  • I'm in Denver and generally expect another month of tomatoes, but I will top them shortly hopefully, that will allow the last ones time to turn red.
  • I got tomatoes last year until October (also in zone 7). This year however, I'm going to pull them out next week. The heat has been brutal and has done a serious job on my tomatoes.

Also, I don't have enough space to keep them going that long. I only have two 3x3 raised beds, and I need to start prepping for fall plantings. So, I need to amend my soil, clean out any debris in the beds, and sow seeds.

Sigh. I've got a lot of work to do next week. It's been so hot that I haven't been able to get out and really keep my beds as clean as I would like.

  • Thanks for the replies. We have been fertilizing since it's a container grown plant. I did some reading tonight and saw a lot of info on growing them up until frost, which here would be late September to October. The last couple we got were only between the size of marbles and golf balls - maybe because it's just been soooo hot? Also, it's a determinate variety which I saw mention may not produce as long. Either way, we're going to leave it be and see what happens.

On that note - if the fruit didn't get to an expected size will it taste differently? I don't eat raw tomatoes so I have no clue how this would impact the flavor.

  • it has been too hot for tomatoes... i'm hoping now that it is cooling to highs in the low 90s/80s that my tomatoes might start producing more
  • Last year all my tomatoes came in during the mid to late fall. (like sept/oct)

Last year this was the case for us - this year much earlier. With the hot weather this summer it but a huge damper on our crop but that hasnt stopped the huge production, just slowed it down a bit.
