So frustrated

I have been trying to find short term disability coverage for myself since my company doesn't offer it, and DH and I would need some type of income replacement when we have kids.  I don't want to start TTC without something like this in place, since my income is the larger of the two.  So far, I have found no one that can offer me coverage.  Aflac would cover it, but it has to be done through payroll deduction, which my company won't do. I am at a complete loss as to what to do, other than start putting half my paycheck into a pregnancy fund each month.  Any other ideas?

  • I have no suggestions other than just start saving now.

    I couldn't use AFLAC through my work either. But, I already have short term disability through work.

    Really, I don't know how much AFLAC offers, I think it's only about 60 percent of your income for part of the maternity leave anyways. You may be able to save up more than that if you start saving now.

  • Thanks for the support.  Saving is probably going to be the way we go, but the whole situation is just frustrating.  My company offers no STD, with their reasoning being that when the company was started it was all men and they didn't need STD to cover pregnancy.  We have asked for the option to have Aflac payroll deducted and they have turned it down, even though it would cost them nothing.  It's been frustrating not just for me, but for other coworkers who have either recently been pregnant, or are TTC in the next year or so.

  • MissLMS I think you are right. You company can't deny you things because you are a woman or because you want to get pregnant. I hope things work out!

  • I would just start throwing money into a savings account!  You could probably save up more money than even the STD could pay out to you.  I am kinda in the same boat.  Now that I am changing jobs....I will lose my STD coverage.  My DH and I are going to start a separate savings for that reason.  You just never know what could happen....babies can sometimes sneak up on you...lol!

    That's something DH and I have always wondered.  It would be paternity leave in their case.  But either way they are as much entitled to it was we are.

    That's something DH and I have always wondered.  It would be paternity leave in their case.  But either way they are as much entitled to it was we are. 

    That's the FMLA law.  From what I remember, they are only required to give you time off (not paid) and your job or an equivalent with the same pay.  Both men and women are given this.  At my office they call it a leave of absence and its covered under the FMLA.

    But I'd do research on it.

  • I work for such a small company that NO benefits are offered.  I've had to take out seperate insurance and retirement accounts etc. 

    DH and I are going to start saving money left and right after the first of the year.  I'm thinking about getting another 2nd job, even though I dont' want too, it speeds up the saving process. 

    GL to all you ladies, babies are definitely something to be prepared for.

    I am not sure of the total number of women, since I work for a defense contratctor, and the company has operations on several different military installations.  At this point, DH and I have just decided to save like crazy.  We aren't planning on TTC for a few more months, and by the time we have kids, DH's car should be paid off, as should all of our credit cards, which will greatly help.  My big problem is I am a planner, so not having something definite in place, like STD, makes me nervous.

    yep if you work for a co w/less than 50 employees they usually don't provide much b/c it costs them WAY too much.

    ok, I missed the part about working for a contractor.  So basically you do contract work and you are getting paid more than someone who would work full time for the company that you contract with (make sense, am I following? as I have tons of friends who do this).  Thing is they usually pay more because it is contract work and the benefits will be less because they see that as a balance (the pay is higher so therefore....).

    I can understand your concerns.  Have you looked into Cobra insurance?  It's expensive.......

    Again, I would look into what they are required to provide you as well.

    I am a full time employee of a company that has a contract with DoD.  I work for the company, but the company and its employees have been contracted out to DoD.  It gets so confusing that sometimes I don't understand it. 

     They don't provide any type of insurance, but federal law requires them to give us "health and welfare" money each paycheck.  Currently, it is 3.00 an hour, but is also taxed as income.  Thankfully I have health insurance under DH, so that is not a worry.
