Did You Save Your Cake?

Hey Girls!

Someone at work was asking me about preserving the top tier of her wedding cake. Mine came in a separate box, which I simply put in the freezer. We googled it and there are all sorts of "how to's" that involve wrapping the cake carefully...Oops! I think it will be fine....

Soooo, did you save your top tier? If so, did you do anything to preserve it? Curious!

Re: Did You Save Your Cake?

  • Nope, it was sliced & served at the wedding.  The idea of eating year-old cake didn't appeal to either one of us at all, tradition or not.  We decided we could always go to the baker who made it and get ourselves a small cake from her if we wanted.
  • Yes and no.

My mom froze it for us while we were on our HM. But we cut it and ate a slice or two each I think because I wanted to know if he'd gotten flavor right or not.

It's still frozen but I plan on throwing it away. I took don't see the appeal of year old cake. Our baker said he'd make us another one for our anniversary if we came back in.

  • yeah year old cake did not appeal to us. Actually, our cake baker includes a free anniversary cake of the same flavor/decorations so we'll be doing that on our one year :)

  • We saved our top tier. It's at my parents house - and honestly, I have no idea how they wrapped it up. My parents were going to figure it out. I'm sure your cake is fine - but then again, I'm no expert!

  • We actually ate ours on our mini-moon.  Our baker said most of her brides and grooms do not freeze their cakes, they just take it on their honeymoon and eat it then.  We didn't know how we'd get our cake out to Hawaii safely (we would have had to freeze it between the wedding and tomorrow when we leave anyways), so we just ate it on our mini-moon which only involved driving.

Our baker also said she'd make us an anniversary cake, which we're totally going to do... it'll be more like an anniversary cake for us/50th birthday cake for my mom since her birthday is the day we got married.

  • I was adamant that we didn't need to save the top tier, but our caterer didn't put it (or, for that matter, the second layer) out anyway

At our day-after bbq, we made it through the second tier, but still had the entire top tier. I told MIL to eat it, feed it to the neighbours, whatever. She was horrified that we didn't want to keep it, so she wrapped it in plastic wrap, then in tinfoil, and put it in a large rubbermaid container in the freezer. Apparently, we'll be having wedding cake at Thanksgiving.

  • My parents put it in our freezer while we were away on our honeymoon, but the week after we got home we put it in the fridge. I was a little irked though when SIL came over (love her to pieces) and said she wanted some cake so H cut into it and put three slices on plates for us. I had planned to share with our families, but I thought the first slices would be just the two of us after a nice dinner one night since we only got what we fed to each other during the reception. Oh well. We plan to get a small cake next year to celebrate the one-year mark.
  • I froze mine, with instructions from the baker on how to do it.

Put it in the freezer unwrapped for 30 minutes, then take it out and securely wrap it in saran wrap, then in a ziploc freezer bag, then in a rubbermaid container to help it keep from getting squashed.

I don't think it'll make it to a year, though.  I keep looking at it every time I open the freezer and want to take it out and eat it.

  • We saved ours. I had pretty much decided before the wedding we wouldn't, but because we had so much cake left I decided to do it. I (with instructions from a cake expert eater at work, whose done this many times) wrapped it in saran wrap, then tin foil, then saran wrap, then tin foil, then put it in a GOOD tupperware container. She told me with these instructions that it will still taste good even after a year.....we shall see.

Haha...me too!  We saved ours.  I'm kind of a tradition junkie, so we did it.  The thing looks twice as big as I remember, so I'm thinking my mom did the layers of plastic wrap and tinfoil.  We don't have a tupperware big enough for it, though.

  • I think when I'm at my in-laws this weekend I will take the cake out and wrap it up properly - can't hurt!!! We'll all have to check in next July and see how these year-old cakes tasted! I am a stickler for tradition too so I was happy to do it. I have also heard of people eating it when the first baby is born, he he he!

  • Our baker provides a free anniversary cake, so we weren't planning on  taking anything home with us. I forgot to tell our venue this, so at the end of the night they pointed to the cake base with the top tier wrapped up in plastic. We had to bring it with us everywhere we went until we got home the following afternoon, including the restaurant for brunch, which was kind of funny.

I gave pieces away to friends and family and we were able to enjoy it before we left on our HM, but I can't wait to get our cake next year!

  • We weren't going to save ours, and then they boxed it up anway so we figured ok what the heck we'll go ahead and save it. My mom wrapped it up for us and cut it into 4 pieces so a few weeks ago DH and I thought we'd try it since we didn't get that much at the reception and we had 4 pieces. It was mostly ok..but starting to get freezer burned already. I can only imagine how it will taste in a year.

I'm sure it will stay in our freezer and then on our year anv DH and I will say something like "hey don't we have wedding cake in our freezer?" "yeah we do." "okay" and that will be it haha. The idea is cute but I'd much rather do something like an anniversary

  • I intended on saving it...but we left it in the hotel fridge, and it got thrown away.  Bummer.  I do think my mom saved part of the second tier...I hope she did.  It was so yummy!

I think all of the preservation that you ladies mention sound great--I am more curious about how to thaw the cake after a year...let it sit in the fridge until it defrosts???

  • Yes.  Our venue included an extra tier so we picked it up the next day.  The baker gave DH some tips so we wrapped it in several layers of saran wrap.  We didn't get to eat anything more than the frosting at the wedding so I'm excited to finally eat it next year!

Well that's funny, I was going to say the EXACT same thing!  Only difference is I live across the country from my parents, so I really don't know how they wrapped it up, I honestly hope they don't find it in a couple months, forget what it is and eat it ! LOL
