can you help me identify this plant?

HI everyone (waves).  I am normally on the baby boards but thought you guys might be able to help me...  We just moved into a new house and this is growing in the back yard and around the mailbox.  it is super low to the ground (as in the height of the foundation, not up to the siding) with the purple flowers shooting up.

 

 

Any ideas?

It's a liriope.  Those flowers will turn white, then form dark purple berries.  I personally like them because it's an evergreen and very easy to take care of.  In some parts of the county I think they're more invasive.

I see you're in CT--the foliage will die back a little; be sure to cut the leaves off (leave them 3-4 inches high) in late winter.  The plant will be fine if you don't, but the dead foliage is not attractive.

cut back all the leaves?  so I am making it a tiny little shrub-let?  (sorry to sound dense but I am new to home/plant ownership )

Yep, whack them all off so it looks like a tuft.  The new leaves that come up hide all the cut ones as they finish dying off.
