Getting rid of mushrooms

I'm pretty sure when I asked DH to pick me up a bag of soil, the bag he bought had mushroom spores in it. Now I have mushrooms popping up constantly and no matter how much I dig them out (even before they open up) they keep coming back.

I have vegetables growing in this area and they are pretty big, so at this point it's hard to dig up all the soil and get rid of it, but I really didn't want to buy any chemicals since again, these are vegetables and I want to eat them. I wanted to try to be organic. Is there any way I can get rid of the mushrooms without buying chemical fungicide, or should I just suck it up and buy some?

Thanks!

Re: Getting rid of mushrooms

  • I just leave them alone. They tend to pop up here when we have a lot of rain and/or humidity, but as soon as it starts to dry out, they go away.

Ditto. I see them pop up in my yard all the time, but once it dries out, they disappear.

  • Mushrooms are common in late summer and early fall. Lots of species don't show up any other time of year.

They will probably not have any effect on your vegetable crop.

But post pics, if you can. I love fungal bodies.

  • The problem with these, though, is that there are so many spores. If I let them pop up they will cover the entire ground like a blanket. And I can't not water my plants, so when I do water, they triple. It's out of control.
  • Eeepp! Fungicides are scary chemicals! I agree with the previous posters let them be.

Pluck them up as gently as you can, and put them in a plastic bag to dispose of them.

  • The mushroom that you see is the sex organ of the fungus that lives underground.  Digging up the mushroom won't get rid of them; you'd have to treat the soil with fungicide.

They really don't hurt anything, and are in fact a sign that you have good nutrients in your soil as they don't grow in crappy soil.

Do you think they'll suck up all my nutrients?

I mean, I can just keep plucking them is people think that's fine, I just don't want them to hurt my veggies in anyway.

  • If you think about it, plucking the mushrooms will remove the nutrients more than just letting them grow and die. At least if they die in your garden, the nutrients are returned to the soil.
