skittle & others familiar w/Tucson
I'm thinking of taking a short trip to Tucson either this wk or next on my 4 day break. What things/restaurants should we def go see or do?? We're prob. going to take our lil Chihuahua pup along, so we'd have to be able to do stuff w/him as well. We like to hike & do outdoorsy stuff, but also am interested in museums & such too. TIA
Re: skittle & others familiar w/Tucson
when i went to college down there, zack's pizza was famous for their chicago style pizza. it's on the edge of campus.
for some reason eegees is totally desired by all my friends. personally, it's just another version of a smoothie, so i just don't get it. their sandwhiches and the drinks are good, but not THAT good. but since they are only in tucson, that's probably why.
other than that, it's been too long since i've lived down there to remember. but i have a friend who just moved back. if you don't get any other answers or answers you like, i can always ask her. she grew up there and knows practically everything, lol.
my read shelf:
Kat - I'm not from Tucson and I agree with you for the MOST part, except that they have REALLY good ranch. Their fries are ok, but dipped in ranch, yum!! I'm a convert to the fries dipped in ranch just because of Eegee's... ;-)
For restaurants, some of our favorite local places:
Rocco's (Chicago Style Pizza - yum!!)
If you like bacon and hot dogs - my husband recommends Guero Canelo (sonoran style hot dogs (bacon wrapped with various toppings) - VERY casual - I don't really call it a restaurant, it's that casual, and it's not my style, but a lot of people here love it). They also have other Mexican food.
Popular Mexican food places here: Mi Nidito (south Tucson - 29th & 4th), Poca Cosa (downtown), trying to think of more...
Bison Witches - YUM soup and sandwiches (also a bar). On 4th Ave (along with some interesting stores and bars). 4th Ave. is a popular area for college kids.
Our favorite steak place is Daisy Mae's (on Anklam, just west of Greasewood - west side of town). It's super casual (think straw on the floor, but I don't know that there actually is straw on the floor). All meals come with baked potato, salad, cowboy beans and Texas toast (just to give you an idea of the ambiance - hehe). But seriously - the best ribeye steak I have ever had in my life. Yum.
There is a family owned chain of restaurants here (the chain is known as Metro restaurants, but each restaurant is independent and unique). Every Metro restaurant I've been to has been good, but I think they are all different now from the last time we went (Ray used to get gift cards to Metro restaurants from his work when he worked under a different manager - it was basically him and his boss in his dept, and he got them as thank you's for jobs well done, so we used to go to a lot of Metro restaurants, but it's been awhile since we've been to any). Oh, I do know that McMahon's Steakhouse is very good though (a Metro restaurant). Here is a link to their website though: http://www.metrorestaurants.com/
For outdoors, you could hike Sabino Canyon (my husband says it's a long hike), Saguaro National Park West - good for hiking. Saguaro National Park East is a pretty scenic area - good for driving (or bike riding). My husband and I have drove around this area at night (it's beautiful and quiet and you can see all the stars, and incredibly romantic).
There is skiing (unsure if it's open right now) and most likely still snow on Mt. Lemmon if you want to drive. Also, Kit Peak (out on Highway 86 - about 45 min to an hour drive from Tucson) - a large observatory near Tucson. I've never been, but always wanted to go.
Um.... I can't think of what else! Where are you staying?
Oh, and other suggestions from my husband:
San Xavier Mission (a beautiful, old mission on the southwest side of town). I've been here - it's beautiful, and definitely recommended.
Pima Air & Space Museum & Titan Missle Museum (keep in mind that my husband is an aerospace engineer) ;-)
There are also downtown walking tours that are supposed to be neat (per my husband). Also, I think Tucson's downtown is really neat and kind of funky. I like going down there for a night out.
The Fox Theater is an old movie theater (I think originally from the 1920's?) downtown that has been refurbished. They sometimes play special movies. A couple years ago, my husband took me to see It's a Wonderful Life on my birthday (Dec 5), and they made it "snow" outside the theater after it was over. Really cool. Here is a link to their website to check out what they have coming up: http://www.foxtucsontheatre.org/mainhome.php
