s/o blood donation- a confession

I've never donated blood.  To be fair, I've never been eligible to donate b/c I've always either: a) weighed under 110 lbs (though these days I'm teetering pretty close at 109); or b) I've been pregnant.  I'm a tiny bit relieved that my near future overseas travel will most likely make me ineligible to donate for the rest of my life.  If I could give, I'd feel compelled to, but I hate needles and the idea of having to lie there as the blood slowly drains out makes me feel faint.  I am on organ donor, though.  When I'm dead they can take whatever they want.  Embarrassed

Re: s/o blood donation- a confession

  • I have only give blood twice.  And both times I did it in college so I could get out of softball practice that day.

I really should donate.  I always see the blood mobile at Walmart but I just never make my way over there.  My H donates blood regularly, a few times a year.  I think he gets out of work if he does, so that's his incentive.  Ha.  We must have moral issues!

  • There are very very few restrictions for overseas travel nowadays Stick out tongue It used to be if you'd been to Africa you couldn't donate at all, now it's only certain areas of Africa in certain times.

I wouldn't feel bad about not donating though. As long as you have a legitimate reason I won't judge. Wink

And you get YesYes from me for being an organ donor!

(sorry I'm oddly passionate about blood/organ donations as people close to me have directly benefited from the awesomeness of others)

  • I had never given until about 3 years ago, when the Bloodmobile started coming to my office every 2.5 months or so. I've never had a problem with needles, so I pushed myself to donate for the first time. After that, I've given each time the bus comes. It does make me feel good about myself to donate, so I enjoy that feeling :) Plus..... the workers on the bus usually order pizza for anyone who donates from my office!!!!! That's a big bonus in my book, haha.
  • Haha- yeah I probably would have tried going to one of the blood drives in high school to get out of class, but I weighed like 90lbs so they never would have let me donate.  Now that I weigh enough that I could probably get away with it (since I don't think they weigh you before you donate) I don't have any really strong incentives to lure me in.

DH has lived in one of these areas and will never be eligible to donate.  Weird, because it's been been almost 20 years since he lived in Africa and you'd think he'd know if he had had contact with HIV by now (even if group O doesn't show up on tests).  He's tried several simes to donate, but they always refuse him.

I do think there are some restrictions for people who have lived in parts of Europe where Mad Cow's disease has been found too.  That would also disqualify him.

Only during some time in the 90s and then in 2000s (I guess when the outbreak was actually happening)

I couldn't donate for a long time because they ask "Have you had sex with anyone whos been to Africa in the last 5 years"

I randomly decided to try to go anyway and it seems they had change there restrictions a lot. I was really surprised.

  • I have never weighed enough either to donate.  I'd really like to, but I think I'd weigh 110 only if I was prego.

    I'm an organ donor too.

    You get a t-shirt!  Ha.

My H always wears his stupid shirt that says "I'm a Hero" on the front and on the back it says "I Donated Blood".  One day I decided to play a joke on him and took a permanent marker and crossed out blood and wrote Sperm.  Ha.  Too bad he caught it before he walked out of the house.

That's mean! I have a shirt that say MVP donor and I like it. And I always do feel kinda proud when I wear it, haha. I only wear it around the house though, I can't wear big t-shirts out in public because they don't fit me right.

Eat more M&Ms.  That's what I do and I don't have any trouble meeting their weight requirements.

  • I used to donate a lot when I was younger, and I always was under the weight, but they would just take less from me. I haven't done it in many years though because my iron was never high enough and they would turn me away so I stopped trying.

Believe me, I eat enough M&Ms for everyone.

My current weight is the most I've ever weighed my entire life.  A whole 103!  I've always tried to gain weight.  I just can't do it.

Ok, don't tell me anymore :P

I use to be skinny.  Like my whole life.  Then I turned 27 and I packed on 10 lbs.  Then I had a baby and packed on an additional 60 lbs.  Now I am about 15-20 lbs away from my fighting weight of 110.  Sigh.  Oh well :

I never broke 100 lbs until I had my first baby.  Between pregnancy and metabolism slowing down, you'll be able to gain weight someday.  Enjoy having a high metabolism and non-birthing hips as long as you can!  Wink

can I just say that I love your pic for your resolutions?? I used to loooove flinstones vitamins, as long as they weren't the ones with iron. Haha, the random things I remember....

Flinstone vitamins are WAY better than some nasty tasting horse pill.  My PCP actually recommended them to me recently.  They're also good for a pre natal.  Who would have thought Fred could pack so much punch?  Yabba dabba do!

I am enjoying it.  I also dread the day when I want/need to lose weight. Having to cut back on all those delicious fatty foods that I enjoy so much doesn't sound like much fun.

  • Ok so I'm super jealous of everyone who weighs < 110lbs. Anyways I always donate because my dad always did when I was growing up so I just started doing it when I got to college. I think my next visit will be 5 gallons so I better get something cool.

I've only gotten sick once and that was when I was in a hurry to get done because I had a lot of work to do. Needless to say I won't ever do that again. If you don't think about it it's really not that big of a deal.

  • I'm a huge fan of Donating blood and because my Dad is a part of Rotary each year they have a donor who will give Rotary's Camp Florida $ for each person to donate. My whole family goes and we have races to see who can fill up the bag fastest. lol

  • I'm jealous of you <110lb girls! I used to donate but I haven't in a while. H does it all the time. Whenever he sees the bus near our house at DD or the movie theatre, he goes for the free donuts or movie tickets.

  • I don't think I've been less than 110 lbs in  20 years, lol! I usually donate when I can. The first time I did it I was in college, then went several years without donating. Since I work in a hospital now and they're always having blood drives, I go when I can. Sometimes I can't donate because my iron is too low though. :( I am also an organ donor. I have seen first hand what a great gift it is!

  • ahhhh I have to confess too!  I have never donated either.  I am also less then 110, and I heard that you must be over that (or over a certain BMI) to donate, so I have always used that as my excuss.  It is terrible, I know.  But the truth is, I HATE getting blood drawn!  I don't care for shots either, but getting blood drawn just is so scary!  This TTC business is making me get over that fear though!
