Flowers...Vent.

Why are they so damn expensive?? Every time there is a funeral my family puts me in charge of buying all the arrangements. I'm trying to buy some today and they are outrageous. Maybe I.m  cheap but $150 for flowers that can't even be left at the grave site seems a bit much.

OK vent over.....

Re: Flowers...Vent.

  • Sorry for your loss.

The cost of flowers in general, makes me mad.  I remember getting huffy about the cost of wedding flowers.

Yes, they're pretty but they're just going to die.

  • Flowers are expensive, yes, but they are a perishable good. Fresh produce costs a lot more than a self stable can of mixed vegetables.

There is a farm to grow the flowers, cut and package them and ship them to a wholesaler, then they go to flower shop (which are typically small businesses with lots of overhang, not a lot of profit) who has to pay for coolers to keep them fresh, employees to process, care for and design them in arrangements, the materials in which to design them in, etc.

I'm a florist, and I personally don't see the point in spending hundreds of dollars for a showy funeral piece that someone will hardly get to enjoy either. You could spend $50, $75 on a beautiful plant garden with a few fresh cut flowers that the person could take and keep. Just a thought. Or send a small arrangement and make a donation.

I think we will be getting a live plant from us. My dad wanted me to get a spray as it was his sister. So I ordered that, now to find a plant for us and my mom.

I know flowers are expensive, but they are so beautiful! I think the plants sound like a much better idea though.

Tasha - I didn't realize you were a florist. And I would never have considered all the costs associated with flowers and why they are so expensive. Thanks for enlightening me :) I love love love flowers!

  • urg. i hate flowers.  especially funeral flowers! personally, I would rather have something that I could keep to remember the person.  I did get a nice plant at my dad's funeral that is still alive on my porch.
