I have been in Phx for awhile now but work in a male dominant field so I work with very few women, so I am wondering how you all meet people here? We do go out with other couples but it would be nice to know some other girls here! I hope this doesnt sound weird or crazy!
Re: Meeting people
my read shelf:
It can be hard to meet people around here if you don't have work to use as a platform. I've been here almost two years now and have only met one person that really took any decent amount of time to get to know me.
She's awesome, and I love hanging out with her, but it would be nice to have more friends in the area for sure. It takes me a bit to get comfortable with new people though, and some people like to make judgments before that happens I think.
I think it just takes time to find the right people that are worth hanging out with, and it helps if you have a shared interest in a hobby. Meetup is good for that for sure, there's a ton of groups in this area.
Have you considered the Junior League of Phoenix? Great way to meet people and help the community at the same time.
Honestly I have been living here in AZ for 4 years and it wasn't until a year ago when I joined this site/board and started making a HUGE effort to find friends for myself. LIke Kristie said I started going to gtg's, I didn't worry if everyone liked me I just focused on making good quality friends. I have been very fortunate to have found so many lovely ladies on this board while the gtg's aren't as frequent as I like or maybe to my liking I think it is a great way to get out there and get out of your comfort zone.
Normaly I am a hugely shy person at first when meeting in person because I always have that thought in the back of my head, "oh no what if I say the wrong thing" or "What if no one likes me." But once I got/get over that I just need to be myself I was amazed with how many friends I have now here.
Like pp have said, join meet up groups, churchs ( if you go), networking sites lke this one are great and your neighbors. There are only a few neighbors in my area that I would consider friends or know would help me out if need be but it took time to get there.
I used to post over here, but stopped when things got a little... crazy a few years ago.
However, I'm coming out of lurkdom for this post.
I moved here from New Zealand in 2007, and knew no one (except my husband). I had to realllllly go out of my comfort zone and go to gtgs, talk to people wherever I went, and meetup.com was AWESOME for that. I joined a foodie group, and although I don't regularly go to things these days, it was great to get some social contact.
Now, I have a bunch of very good friends, most of whom I met right here on the Phoenix Nesties board. I doubt any of them are still on here, but I found this place to be invaluable for help/advice. I've also met some of THEIR friends, and have been slowly expanding my circle.
Kylie... your blog looks DELICIOUS!!! I'm sooo trying that stuffed pork recipe this weekend. I was on the board back then too (screen name was ArmenianBride.) Came back over a year ago.
As for making friends here... I'm always excited to meet new people and make friends, but I find it harder and harder because I end up being hurt by these so-called friends. Every time this happens, I add on to the wall I'm building. I'm always up for meeting new people. This board is a great way to meet other ladies. Hopefully you can make it to a GTG when we have one.
Thank you!
You should totally do the stuffed pork - it was awesome.
I remember the ArmenianBride screen name - good to see you back!
I'll stick around for a while I think. New people, means the sillyness factor will be gone!
I know FMD. Quite well. Lol.
I remember the name Skittles, but not the person.
I don't know Destructo.
