Yard Sale Advice...

Anyone have any advice regarding yard sales?

We're having our first on Saturday, and I was wondering if anyone has any tips that they've learned from experience?

Re: Yard Sale Advice...

  • We are having one on saturday too. We always make some coffee, most people love it so they look around a little more and that makes them buy more. Sometimes we have cookies or something light to snack on. Most people will buy this stuff if you put a price on them.

Make sure if you put up signs that they are in a well spotted place. Place an ad in your local newspaper. They are pretty cheap and hard core yard sale goers map out routes.

I would make sure to have quarters, nickles, dimes, and ones on hand. People pay with weird demonations sometimes. Keep paper and pen handly if it is a mulit-family yard sale, so you can keep track of whose stuff was bought.

You may want to go see if a local grocery store or wal-mart (somewhere like that) will donate the plastic gocery bags so that if someone buys a lot you have a bag. Thats all I can think right now! Good Luck! Let's hope our sales are a huge success!

  • Make sure stuff is organized.  I think clothes sell better if they are hung up.  Be realistic on prices.  I am bad to want to overprice my stuff when I start thinking about how much I paid for it.  Most yard sale goers aren't going to pay much.

Location is important too.  If you live far out, you might want to consider moving it to a freinds house or business on a main street.

Good Luck.  I love yard sales!!!

  • Make your signs out of hot pink poster board, they are great attention getters and wording shows up better. also, do as much advertising as possible in advance, i always check weekly posts for second hand things we're looking for - you can post for free on craig's list and include directions. Also watch out for people wanting to look inside or acting sneaky; last fall there were a few college age girls who stole some items from our garage sale!
