Dog Help...

So I have been keeping my two bichon poodles in a crate when dh and I go to work or leave for the day. They have water in it and it is big enough for them to lay fully stretched out but not to the point where they have the space to pee/poo. Ever since we have had it (almost 2 years) we just tell the dogs "in" before we leave and they know to go in the cage or even if they saw us putting our shoes on they would just go with no problem/hesitation. Now the past couple of days when we tell the boy dog "in" he just stares at me or cowers down when I walk towards him. I don't know if its cuz he is getting old and moody or what. The girl dog likes it still and she goes right in and lays down. They don't go to the bathroom in it and we change out the blanket at least once a week like we always have. Any ideas on why the sudden change or advice? We don't like leaving them out because it seems every time we do we come home to puke on the couch!!

Re: Dog Help...

  • I have no advice because our pups have free roam of the house, but maybe try the Pets board!

  • Maybe make the crate a positive or fun experience again with a treat or new toy? I don't know what would cause the behavior change, but giving a new positive experience should help. Hope it gets better

My parents do this, they put a treat in there for Daphanie and also, since she gets a little seperation anxiety sometimes they leave some music on for her, they usually do the jazz station to help keep her calm.  I don't really have any other suggestions other then maybe a treat, i hope it gets better.

^^^^^What she said. Give them a treat or something every time you put him in it then start to slowly wean him off the treats.
  • maybe he had a bad experience when you were gone one day?  such as his collar/tag to stuck in the bars and he couldn't get out for a while?  possibly another place would be more comfortable for him?  have you thought about putting your pups in the bathroom?

i do this with my doxie and golden retriever.  it's bigger than any crate.  they have room for a blanket to curl up in (big thing for my doxie).  i put down water, plus since i don't put bleach tablets in the toilette tank, i don't feel bad if my golden drinks out of the toilette (as gross as this sounds).  for the most part, my dogs are really great about not going to the bathroom IN the bathroom (ha ha), but if they ever were to have an accident, i really don't have to worry.  the floor is tile, the blanket or any bathmats i can pick up and drop in the washing machine.

    hope this helps!

  • We try to make her crate experiences fun and calm. She only gets her "kong" in her crate anytime she goes in she gets it, anytime she goes in she gets it, when she leaves her crate it goes away. We also always leave a toy for her. She loves it now and goes in often just to chill. I'm sorry :( I hope your puppy gets back to a normal routine.

  • We crate our puppy and to get him to "go in his house" we give him his favorite treat only when it is time for him to go in. We started by giving in a Kong full of peanut butter when he would go into his kennel, and eventually transferred over to Beggins. He LOVES Beggins but only gets them when he is in his kennel. He has gotten so used to it that now I when I am getting ready to leave, I show him the bag and tell him "go in your house." He will run in and sit, I close the gate and once it is closed I give him a few strips.

It took some time for him to get used to it, but I agree with everyone else. You have the make the kennel a rewarding place to be. We never use it for punishment and our dog loves it! He is now even goes inside to lay down even if we are home. It is like his safe spot.

Yes this. I totally bribe my dogs with treats. Lily will go in there no problem every time, but Gizmo is so stubborn(and we don't even crate him. we just put him in the laundry room on a dog bed next to the crate that Lily's in). He will run the other way or flip over onto his back and play dead. We will sometimes just drag him in there by his little legs.

Just pick him up and put him in there then.
