I tried to make a clicky poll, but it wouldnt' post for some reason... anyway... I'm curious.
DO you have a land line at your place ?
Why or why not ?
If you have it, do you use it ?
If you care to share, how much do you pay for it ?
Re: Poll - PHONE
DO you have a land line at your place ?
No
Why or why not ?
We decided to get one, and then realized that having it bundled with our cable meant that it's Internet based, not actual land/Pacbell based (maybe I'm dumb for not understanding all of this beforehand), but the whole reason we *might* have wanted one was in case of power outage and not having our cells, and the fact you had to have internet access to get to our landline made it make even less sense to have it. So we dropped it.
If you have it, do you use it ?
We had it for about a year before dropping it, and never answered it once (it was always telemarketers, and we knew that), never used it to make a call once. The only thing it was somewhat good for was that I could call it, hang up, call it, hang up, call it...and that would clue in Todd that his cell phone was in the bedroom and he should go get it b/c his wife was calling :P ...I had to keep calling b/c if I had only called once, he would assume telemarketer and go on to keep watching TV.
Also, the previous owners left a landline phone in the garage. That was the one we hooked up, and we never even had another. lol. So no, we spent a year with it and NEVER used it.
If you care to share, how much do you pay for it ?
I think about $12/month.
Yes, we do. We are required to have one by the police department DH works for (although they do not pay for it -- kinda lame!). But, we'd probably have one even if they didn't require it.
We pay about $30/month, and that includes call waiting, caller ID, local flat rate service, and a small fee for not having our listing published (also lame!) We do not pay for long distance, since we rarely use it, and when we do, we just use our cell phones.
ETA: We do use it, mainly for local calls to our parents, the pizza place, the Chinese food place, calling 800 numbers (i.e. for our bank, credit cards, other service companies, etc). We also give out the phone number to family and close friends, and use it for anything where we have a joint interest (i.e. service providers, contractors, doctor's office, etc).
nope - h and i have run off of our cell phones only the past 10 years
we don't have a need for one. that said, h's business DOES have a landline for the message machine but we don't have an actual phone hooked up to it.
Yes
We need it for DSL and Satellite wants it too
We use it to receive calls. It's more stable around the house than the cell.
I think it's about $25 a month
Yes, we have one.
We have one b/c we get our internet through AT&T as well and b/c we have an alarm system at our house that uses our phone line.
We almost never make calls from our phone (we always use cell phones) and don't generally answer our home phone.
We pay about $30 for the super basic local service only.
We do not have a landline. We used to have one only for DSL. We got rid of it when we got cable because we almost never used it. The only calls we got were from telemarketers and my mother :-/ We get good service on our cell phones at home, and didn't want to pay for the landline anymore so we got rid of it.
I think we got the cheapest possible landline at the time, and with taxes/fees it was about $10-$15 a month (through AT&T).
DO you have a land line at your place ? Nope
Why or why not ? My husband is a cheap asss and doesn't think we need a landline.
We just got a landline in September when we moved. Before that I hadn't had one since like 1999 or 2000.
The decision to get a landline was solely based on having a phone to call 911/teach C to call when she's a little older.
Since we have it I try to use it when I'm home instead of my cell, but it took me awhile to remember it was there.
It's part of our comcast triple play which for cable/internet/phone currently costs $99/month. But I would not suggest this if you are getting it for security/emergency use and I will be getting a traditional (not cable) phone when we move from this rental. Several times I've picked up the phone and had no dial tone, and they always say "this hardly ever happens" but it's happened 3 times in the 6 months I've lived here, so to me that isn't "hardly ever" - what if one of those times had been for an emergency? Since that's my motivator to have it I want more reliable service.
I insisted on keeping our landline, so our kid(s) could call for help in case of an emergency. I know he/she could do the same with our cells, but I doubt I'll remember to keep them in the exact same place all the time. Or what if we're not at home, and the babysitter/friend/whoever is with our kid is not responsive?
We also have relatives overseas, and it's cheaper for them to call our landline phone. Whenever Skype or the internet connection is down, I can use our landline phone to call them. I regularly spend 30-60 min on the phone with my mom, and it actually hurts my ear less (literally) when I'm using the landline phone than a cell.
Last, we use the landline to call 800 #, especially for work meetings when we work from home.
Do you have a land line at your place ? Yup.
Why or why not ? I like the option of having a second line "just in case". We also use that phone number when we have to sign up for something and don't want to give our cell numbers.
And, I just love how cute it is. It goes so well with my kitchen, and I love when people say "Can you really make calls with it?!" and pick it up and hear a dial tone.
(sorry for the crappy, slanted cell pic)
If you have it, do you use it ? Sometimes. Huz's mom is the one who calls the phone the most (after she tries each of our cell phones 27 million times)
If you care to share, how much do you pay for it ? It's bundled with our internet/dish packeage, so I'm not sure about individually. I can check though.
OMG .... I NEED NEED that phone !! SO SO SO adorable I am super uber jealous my friend !
We do have a land line. Originally it was for our alarm and emergencies, now it's only for emergencies because our alarm is over cell lines now, with a cool iphone app that lets us arm and disarm the house. Any way, I digress. I am debating whether or not to eliminate the bill ( it is a real, land line through ATT, not VOIP) and was suposed to be $8, but the taxes almost double it and turn it into a $17 a month bill for something we NEVER use (we probably should use it to call 800 numbers, since our cell still uses minutes for that, and it's totally free with the LL, but it's so much easier to be wherever I want to be (we don't have a cordless land line, we just bought the cheapest corded phone we could, especially because one of our reasons was to avoid no phone with no power situations.
Huz got it for me for my birthday last year. I think he ordered it from Sears, but they had them at a couple of different places (Toys R Us, JC Penney). It's a really fun hone to have
I hope we can be phone twinsies!!!
Nope we have our cell phones.
We currently are in AT&T territory so we can get DSL withought having to get a landline. When we were in Verizon territory it was not the case and we had to get a landline that we never used just to have internet.
DO you have a land line at your place ? No
Why or why not ? We don't really need one. We both have cell phones.
If you have it, do you use it ? We used to have one for internet purposes in our first apartment, but now we can get the internet on a dedicated line (or something like that)
If you care to share, how much do you pay for it ?
This is us as well.
Yes
Why or why not ?
Our old house was like a black hole for cell phone reception so we had to have it in order to make/receive calls when at home.
If you have it, do you use it ?
At the old place we used it fairly regularly. Now there's not really much reason for it and we're considering getting rid of it.
If you care to share, how much do you pay for it ?
It used to be bundled with our internet, but now it's not so it's around $37 per month with a long distance plan.
DO you have a land line at your place ?
Yes
Why or why not ?I was adamant that we have it since we have kids. If there is an emergency I want a child or one of us or someone who is babysitting to be able to find the phone and dial 911 and not have to search for a cell phone or realize that the cell phone is not charged etc. It just feels safer to me.
If you have it, do you use it ?Yes we use it as our primary phone since we have it.
If you care to share, how much do you pay for it ?It's bundled with our cable stuff so I don't know the exact price. Under $20 though.
we do have a LL. the husband HATES cell phones, and even though i pay every month for him to have a phone... he won't use it in the house.
my husband would be REALLY happy if it would have just stayed 1983 for the entire span of his life....
We do not. Every once in a while, I think it would be a good thing to have but it's pretty pricey to add it to the package. I don't think I've had a landline since 2003 when I moved out of CA.
Do you have a land line at your place? Yes
Why or why not? We only do because my mom has a different cell phone provider, no data plan and we have not many minutes on our cell phones. We tend to talk for a long time so I went over our cell phone minutes before we got a land line.
If you have it, do you use it? Only to talk to my mom. The rest of the family has Verizon like us and a data plan.
If you care to share, how much do you pay for it? I think it's $40 a month. It's bundled with our cable.
