Ladies, I have to ask...

I do not mean to offend anyone when I ask this question, but why do all you ladies want to go without any pain meds during labor? Just an honest question.

  • I've always wondered this too. You would take pain meds to get a tooth pulled, why not when delivering a person out of your vag?

Not to be snarky at all and I do respect anyones decision to go med free but its just not for me.

  • Haha well I personally try to stay away from most meds in most situations.

Anything strong really messes with my body and I don't do well.

Based on my research I just didn't like what could possibly happen (and I know it doesn't happen to everyone) from getting pain meds ; epi could possibly slow down/stall labor (which could cause the need for pit or c-section) and could possibly cause baby to be sleepy when born hindering nursing ; IV meds can cross the placenta which I didn't like.

Again- I know these are possibilites not definitelies (haha I made up a word)

And I just feel like that's the way God made it- he said we would have pain with childbearing, I knew it was something I could get through (I know that not everyone believes in God but this is what I believe to be true)

Honestly, my birth "pain" was maybe an 8.5 out of 10 and it really wasn't that bad, I was in the zone and I was only in labor 7.5 hours and only about 2 of that was "difficult"

  • Because to me, you medicate a medical problem and childbirth is not a medical problem. It's natural.

Having a tooth pulled is a medical problem, and if I felt the need for pain medication, I would accept it.

For me personally, I was raised in a home where I was taught that childbirth would be the most painful thing I would ever experience - but that the pain was normal, and would be gone in an instant.  It's just the way it works in my head.  I'm not scared at all of the pain, and honestly, can't wait to experience everything childbirth throws at me.  My body was built for this, and I know I can do it.

I have this completely primal desire to go through labour the way that billions of women before me have gone through it.  The way nature intended it to happen.

To follow up my actual beliefs on the subject - I do not cope well with pain medications or sedatives of any sort.  I've woken up during a medical procedure that I was double dosed for.  I also have extensive allergic reactions and strange tolerance levels that do not make me comfortable accepting any pain medications.

Add to that the list of rare but TOTALLY possible complications with things like epidurals and I am pre-booked on a non-refundable ticket to the drug-free train.

I have absolutely no judgement to women who choose the drug route - I just hope that everyone who chooses that goes through the research to find out what is going in their body, why it works, what the complications are to both Mom and Baby, so they can make an informed decision.  Everyone chooses what is the best decision for themselves and their baby, and I have no qualms about that!

  • I am always amazed by those who can go drug free. I guess for me I already knew I didn't have a high tolerance for pain particularly without knowing how long labor can last. If I knew my labor wasonly going to be 5 hours then I may have tried to go without meds, but if it is going to last >8 I dont really have the stamina. I wanted the epi, but we will see what happens for future pregnancies. They say labors progress faster with subsequent births, so I may not have time for drugs the next go around. There are tons of side effects that are possible, I was lucky we didn't have any serious complications and that A wasn't too sleepy either so we were able to breast feed immediately.

  • Oh Jaye, you sound just like my mom.

For real, I don't have anything against a drug free/natural birth. Do what you think is best. As long as you're not telling me that I'm horrible for getting an epi. I just can't stand when women think they're freaking super heros for going med free. You're brave, sure. Not a hero.

My mom had all 4 of us at home, med free. She raised us to want to do the same... um, no thanks! I remember when my youngest sister was born and I was old enough to comprehend what was going on, I flipped. I remember thinking my mom was dying. I gave her my Rainbow Brite doll to protect her and then went and hid in the closet until it was all over and someone came and got me. haha!

Just don't go all BSC on your daughters if they don't feel the same way as you when they grow up and have kids, and chose to go the hospital/medication route.

I'm totally offended that you just compared me to your Mom!

    I have zero judgement, absolutely.

  • i had one with dominic, and didn't have any complications with it. well, aside from the cathedar messing up my peehole, and it hurt to pee for quite a while. i made it to 8/9 with no epi, and i was basically done. no one pressured me to get one, i just went ahead and got it. i know i can do it without one, and i'm going to do it this time. i just want to know i can do it for myself, kind of like a personal accomplishment.

  • haha Sorry Jaye. I take that back. You actually don't sound like my mom cause she's a crazy psycho *** and would be saying how awful of a person you all are for having your babies in an evil hospital, and how dare you get an epi and drug your child, and how DARE you vaccinate, pierce their ears, not BF (even if you tried and couldn't), cloth diaper, and OMG you're going to get induced?!?!?! :::Head explosion:::

Whoa... sorry. Got on a rant there for a minute. haha!

That's what I'm talking about!  :)  I was like WHOA, with all the shet I've heard your Mom pull...I am not crazy and I am not preachy about my beliefs.

I want my daughter to know that I will support her even if her beliefs and values are different than mine.  Of course, I would hope she was a carbon copy of me (because I'm so ridiculously perfect...NOT) :P

You did what was right for you and Cai, Amber - and I support you in that :)

Awww thanks Jaye. I think it all turned out pretty good.

I totally support you and your natural ways too and can't wait to see how it all turns out for you. I am excited to hear your birth story!

I don't have anything against people who choose to do the natural route either. ::hugs::

  • I agree with Jaye and Christina. I want to do it because 1- I don't like the thought of an epi. I've heard some horror stories and I'd rather avoid it. 2 - It's the way God intended it to be. 3 - I want to be in full control of the situation and I feel with an epi you're TOLD what to do because you can't feel anything. JMO!

I think most people get epi's now and say they can't do it without is because of how redily (can't spell that lol) available they are. The stigma in the US and childbirth is PAIN and tons of it but if you prepare yourself and believe in yourself, you can totally do it without. Many many many women have done it!

Once the baby is out, I don't want to still be numb, I want to be back to normal which is what I hear happens from a non-medicated birth.

To each their own, I just wish more women had the confidence in themselves to at least try it.

Agree, but personally I'm going to try to do as much as I can before taking the pain meds. Just a personal goal I suppose. I agree this is a huge bodily function (I guess you could call it that?!) to deliver a person from your body and pain is definitely endured. I, for one, hate tooth pain to begin with so we'll see.
