Crib Bumpers?

Are they bad?  DH said we couldn't put one in DD's crib it causes SIDS?

Any help ladies?

Some people believe it could cause SIDS or some sort of breathing hazard (sp) but they have breathable ones that looks kind of like netting so it will serve the perpose of keeping their legs and arms in but they could stull breath if they roll over against it. HTH

I had no idea until DH made a big deal out of it today when we were buying her crib/bedding.

Pretty much all crib bedding poses a SIDS risk.  We use the fitted mattress pad, a fitted sheet and a sheet saver tied to the rails.  MIL made a crib skirt that matches the room, but I'm glad I didn't waste money on an expensive set.

Pick up Baby Bargains-- it was such a life saver in figuring out exactly what baby products and what brands to buy.

Well, when we bought our house it was a model, and her room was done a tan color, with one thick chocolate brown stripe, and two thinner kiwi green stripes (one on top, one on bottom), so we decided to just keep those colors in the room.  Her bedding set is like kiwi greens and a deep kind of magenta pink and chocolate browns in a paisley print.  

Originally we weren't going to do her nursery until the 72 hour consent was signed, but we went to the baby store in Tucson (the only store in the state that sells brand of crib we bought) and they had our crib in our color in stock (normally it takes 4-6 weeks to get in), so we decided to buy it, and then of course figured we needed her bedding set and mattress.

This is what I'm learning.  I'll pick up Baby Bargains though, good to know.  We bought our bedding set through Costco, it was the same one I had found on a website, but was a 10 piece set (instead of the web sites 4 piece set) for like $50 cheaper then they were charging for the 4 piece set.

There really shouldn't be anything in the crib with the baby except for a good fitted sheet...  Of course, there are varying beliefs on the subject, and until the baby is rolling around a crib bumper might not do too much harm.   

The other side of the coin is that there are studies showing that the risk of SIDS is related to air circulation.  In my mind, a bumper obscures proper air circulation in and out of the crib. 

We won't be using a bumper at all - if in the future we find the need, we'll get a breathable one.  Health Canada warns against the use of crib bumpers and other un-necessary bedding, and that's good enough for me!

We have one, and its been fine. When DS was super little, we had him sleeping in a swaddler and in between a sleep wedge so he couldn't "accidentally" roll over. So there was never any fear that the bumper would pose a threat....besides, when they start rolling around on their own, they are fine anyways. DS is 14 months, we still have his bumper in And I plan on having one for the next as well. If you are paranoid about it, they do sell "breathable bumpers"

We actually just bought one because Raedyn has been rolling around in her crib and getting her legs stuck.  The risk of SIDS goes down significantly after 6 months.  We don't have anything else in the crib with her and keep the ceiling fan on for air circulation.

Ditto this. They do impose a bit of a higher SIDS risk, and they do block air circulation a bit (especially for us because we have a floor fan instead of a ceiling fan). And it's about to get a little warmer and stuffier around these parts.   We kept the crib totally free of everything until just about 2 weeks ago when Ryan started scooting himself around the crib. We'd find him in the morning with his head shoved in a corner of the crib and worried that he'd bump himself hard or get an arm/leg stuck. So we have a breathable bumper on now. But I don't think you'd really have a need for one until the baby is about 5 months old, which is also past the highest SIDS risk age.

I'm definitely no master of SIDS, so I have no idea what the 100% best way to handle crib bedding is.  But for us, we chose the no bumper until we need a breathable one.  It may be overkill, but I'm a little neurotic.

I don't think it's overkill or neurotic! We'll be using a breathable one as well along with an organic mattress because there are studies showing the chemicals in regular mattresses can cause SIDS. Now, you think YOU'RE neurotic?? LOL

Thanks ladies. Jaye- I read health Canada's study, very interesting! I think well leave it out until she starts moving in her sleep and then we'll go from there. Stacy- we are also using an organic mattress DH insisted for many reasons. He's also searching out an organic mattress cover- maybe he's the neurotic one
