To Tip or Not to Tip?

We have hired a local children's music singer to play at our boys birthday party this weekend and my husband seems to think he doesn't need a tip.  This guy is not expensive at all so I had already planned on tipping him but my husband brought up a good point..which was...He is in business for himself, it's not hes like a hair stylist or waiter who's salary is pretty much dependent on gratuities.  Then my husband said..you don't tip the lawn guy or the plumber so why would you tip this guy?  I see both sides but wanted to get some input from you all.

So WWYD?  Tip or not?

Re: To Tip or Not to Tip?

  • If you are feeding him, no tip.  If not, then tip.  I tip my lawn care people (annually) and would do the same if a plumber went above and beyond to save me time/money.  IMO, if the attitude warrants a tip, I give one.

I agree with this. But your husband made a good point too. He will not expect a tip but if you truly enjoyed his service he would appreciate a tip.

  • If he's awesome and the kids love him- tip.  If not, don't tip.

Your H has a good point.  I think the rule is that you don't have to tip if it's the owner of the business.  Like pps said though, if he does a super great job, then throw him a little extra.

  • I agree on tipping if you are especially pleased with the job he does.
