How can I get rid of mosquitos?

I feel like my house is (outside) infested with mosquitos.  If the garage door is opened, they are swarming around.  I can't stand to go outside, and with two little ones, its going to be a long summer.

I need to do something.  I'm going to call the town to see if they do any kind of spraying, but is there anything you can think of to do?

There is no standing water, to speak of so that's not an issue, but I just can't stand it anymore.  I get eaten alive, and I hate the thought of ALWAYS having to have bug stuff on.

I recently got a mosquito magnet http://www.mosquitomagnet.com/ as our friends have one and said it works great. We have't set it up yet but I have high hopes.

Let me know how it works out for you. With this wet spring, I feel like I'm constantly slapping myself!

  • I just read that lavendar repels mosquitos so I bought a couple plants as well as some seeds and I'm planning on putting it by our front porch in a bed, on our deck in potters and planted out in our veggie garden. I'm keeping my fingers tightly crossed it will do the trick.

I've also read that keeping a dryer sheet in your pocket will keep them away.

Off to check out the pp's mosquito magnet link...

  • There is standing water around you just need to find it.  They only need water 3/4" in diameter to breed and 90% of mosquitoes don't travel more than 30 feet from where they hatched.
  • Check your gutters.  Clogged gutters can hold water leading to mosquitos.

In the past, we have also used the Cutter spray that attaches to the end of the hose.  This year, we're trying an organic product called EcoSmart that also attaches to the hose.  If you use a hose sprayer type, make sure to spray the grass and any trees and bushes.

  • The Cutter spray really works.  Mosquitoes loooooove me and I honestly got sick once from getting too many bites at an outdoor wedding (at the edge of a damn swamp, brilliant bride).  The Cutter spray works like a champ in our backyard.  I can go outside without being eaten alive.

Couldn't have said it better. Gutters are a very common breeding ground. They breed in water sitting on plant leaves, they can breed in a trash can lid or a frisbee or other toys, or in empty pottery. They love bird baths and bird feeders that collect water. They only need one tablespoon. That means a shovel left lying on the grass for too long, or a tarp over a car or boat, or a grill cover, or even inside a grill. Places you don't think of as holding water.

  • I don't ever pOst here, but I heard a really neat trick for this. Since they are so small and aren't strong enough to fly onto the wind-get a large fan and place it near your patio (or whoever you are). A landscaper friend just told me this. A tall fan would be best, I think, so that it isn't blowing directly at you.
