How many tomato plants did you plant this year?

We said we weren't going to go nuts, but we have 5 different varieties.

I had to have grape tomatoes, and then the husband wanted a Mr. Stripey, and my daughter picked out a Better Boy, and then I remembered I wanted San Marzano's for sauce, and we also go a White Wonder for fun.

I am going to be very busy canning and freezing this summer!  Anyone else plant a lot?

Re: How many tomato plants did you plant this year?

  • 12.  there are two of us & the amount of tomatoes we consume leads to me to believe there won't be that much canning & freezing (we'll have to buy from the FM for that)

We have sungold, black cherry, amy's sugar gem, eva's purple ball, siberian & stupice.  Two plants of each.

  • hehe...umm 22 :)

2 cherry tomato, 2 grape bushing, then a smatering of canning tomato plants...prob 15 or so amish paste, san marzano, and then some new kind I've never seen before viva italian or something to that effect we'll see how they do. :)

Last year I had 6 plants and I still had to keep going to get more for canning.  This year I will can strictly from the backyard I hope!  :)

  • lol- y'all are hardcore. this is our first year gardening, and we just have a 4x8 raised bed. so, just three plants for us- cherry, better boy and early girl.

  • 12 plants, 10 varieties.

My daughter's school does a plant sale, so we bought a flat of 8 off that. 2 of the 8 had 2 plants in the containers. San Marzano, Green Zebra, Japanese Trifele, Cherokee Purple, Black Cherry, Brandywine and two others I can't remember.

Then I bought a determinate bush for some earlies. And another cherry because my son eats them like they're candy. That one's a "compact vine" whatever that means. Nursery worker swore they were her favorites last year and I had to try them.

Does anyone else do ground cherries? They're kind of like a sweet tomatillo. I got three plants this year and am hoping there's enough for a few pies.

  • Mmmm, I've heard amazing things about Sungold.

Do you guys ever do a "tasting"? One of the moms at the plant sale was talking about how they do one. Sounds like fun. Mini-harvest party of sorts.

  • 3 sweet 100 plants. I gave away the other three I had to my coworker.
  • 7 plants (6 varieties)

  • 8 plants, 4 varieties.  I was going to get only 6, but then saw the Parks Whoppers and thought they might be a fun experiment :)

ONE! And even that is more than I normally grow! I have a large container of patio tomatoes on the deck. They aren't very productive, there hasn't been quite enough sun.

YES!  I have 4 of those.  I love them & they store well (like a week on the counter!).  They are amazing dipped in a little bit of chocolate.  The "wrapper" is a great handle for dipping. :)

I do a "tasting" via the farmer's market every year to think about what I want to grow the next year.  Sungolds, despite being a "dreaded" hybrid (I'm not a hard-core heirloom-ist), are both prolific and delicious...for me.

  • 18, 4 or 5 different varieties (picked them up at the farmer's market today). I planted them all in topsy turvy planters... we'll see how that goes- my back yard is not ready for a garden this year, so I'm improvising.
  • 5, 3 different varieties... beefsteak, celebrity, and sweet 100 cherry. We did them in containers this year, so far they are doing very well.

  • 20+ and I have no idea which varieties.  They are all volunteers from last year and gifts from friends.  It will be fun seeing what ripens.
  • Just two. One is a grape tomato plant and the other is regular tomatoes. I forget what kind. I'm the only one who eats tomatoes, so no point in growing anymore.

First year for me too (with edibles). I did one tomato plant. Forget what variety it is, but similar to beefsteak. It is in a self watering planter on the patio table and is over 3' high already with tons of flowers.

  • Way too many, I'm sure.  I order from Burpee, which mostly sells in 3 or 4 packs.  I have 9 plants total.

    1 - Black Krim

    1 - Big Rainbow

    1 - Brandywine

1 - Patio Princess (cherry tomatoes)

    1 - Bushsteak

  • Three.

Two Better Boys and one variety whose name escapes me that was supposed to be good for salsa.

  • I have 11, because I didn't have room for the 12th plant (gave it to a neighbor).  Six Celebrities, and 5 Better Boys.

I looked for Amish Paste, because I read online in multiple places that that variety would be best for canning, but I couldn't find it.

  • I plant to sell so I have 65 plants- we have about 6 varieties and only some are used to sell. We can and provide to one market and one restaurant. WE will see how the weather cooperates but we had about 800 lbs to sell last year with 49 plants.
  • 7, I think. I majorly cut back, last year I had 17. I can a lot, but I'm due with my third baby mid-august, which is right around the time everything is going to be getting ripe and will need to be canned. I'm probably just going to do a few quarts of whole tomatoes and some salsa. I figure if I need more, I can always get some from the farmers market.
