New to (organic) gardening & to this part of TheNest

Hi ladies.  I'm starting gardening here soon, DH is just finishing tilling and making a garden for me.  I'm into organic produce so all my seeds are organic (not sure if that makes any difference or if it's a marketing gimmic) and I'd like to keep them relatively chemical/toxin free.

For the other organic gardeners out there - what if anything are you using for a fertilizer and weed "killer"?

Please forgive me if this topic has been covered before and/or it's just down right silly.  I'm not a green thumb (but DH fortunately is, just not as concerned with safe/organic produce)

  • Looks like Lowe's carries a lot of organic weed killer, fertilizer, etc.  Preferences on brands etc?
  • I don't use weed killer or fertilizer in our organic garden, we just add compost each year and then weed by hand.  Since we have 2 4x4 beds it doesn't take that long.

We follow the Square Foot Gardening method and used Mel's Mix for the soil.  It was weed free the first year but small ones are creeping in this year, probably stuff that landed in there that has sprouted.

  • I use manure, compost, and/or worm poop as fertilizer.

I pull weeds by hand.  No worries about anything with that method!

  • Good point, it's not a super large garden...I could pull by hand....
  • I'd also look at smaller hardware/garden supply stores. I used to get a 'fertilizer' for my flowers that was liquid worm poop. Great stuff. Now to keep bugs off the veggies, I have an organic uhh carrot oil? haha. I don't know, it's a spray. They had a few options at the store to keep deer away, etc. It's pretty popular now so I don't think you'll have a problem.

    And I weed by hand.

  • Overall, pests haven't been much of an issue in my veggie garden.  Aphids can be blasted off with a stream of water.  Neem oil & insecticidal soap work on killing soft-bodied insects (like aphids, white fly, etc).  Sluggo is great for slugs.

I ditto just using compost for fertilizer.  If you want to go crazy you could consider fish emulsion and/or kelp meal.

Also, not sure where you are, but it's likely too late to start summer veg like tomatoes, peppers, etc. from seed.

DH came home last night with some organic ant spray to spray on the timbers around the garden...he kind of rolled his eyes at the organic part/but at the same time I think he thought it was cool.

He's anxious that if my veggie don't work out he will turn it into his perennial beds next year! I hope he doesn't sabotage me! :)
