I'm guessing this is a long shot, but I'm wondering if their are any
nurses out there that either practice as a nurse practioner or hold some
sort of administrator role in nursing?
I Currently work as a nurse in an endoscopy unit. For the moment, I like my job. That being said, I CANNOT imagine myself doing this for the next 30-40 yrs. I was about to start school to become a family nurse practitioner, but chickened out 2 weeks before school started. Since then, I have sort of considered a more administrative role in nursing and possibly going back to school for a masters degree in health care administration.
Has anyone out there pursued either of these careers? Does anyone have an opinion as to weather either of these careers will be a job in need in the future?
Thanks everyone!
Re: Any nurses out there??
I recently graduated with my Master's in Adult Health Nursing and practiced as a nurse practitioner for a little over a year. Most recently I have started working in the academia role, at a local university and started working on my DNP.
If you are planning on starting for your Nurse Practitioner, just keep in mind that come 2015, Master's prepared nurse practitioners will be phased out and everyone prepared as a nurse practitioner will need to have a DNP (Doctor of Nursing Practice). I think that will definetely open up the opportunity for more of a healthcare administration role, as you can focus your capstone project towards administration, but it will all depend on your past background, and where you want to work.
Hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions!
I think you have to look at your personality and the things that you do like about your job. Can you see yourself as a leader? If you don't mind being out of patient care and you know you have excellent leadership qualities, I would for sure look into a MSN in management or admin. In the meantime, you need to work your way up and find more opportunities that show you are interested in moving up. Do you work as a charge nurse? Are you on any committees?
If you don't think NP is the right venue for you, but you also don't think leadership is where you see yourself. Have you considered education?? There are sooooo many opportunities for nursing education. You can get a MSN in education. You can work as a educator in a patient care setting. You won't be directly involved in patient care, but you will be educating those that are. You will be impacting how they care for their patients. You could also be a professor in a lecture setting or a clinical instructor with a MSN in education.
I personally love teaching. I have always loved precepting new nurses and know that when I decide to further my education, it will be in nursing education. However, you have to decide what is right for you.
