After being at my job for 6 years, I think I am finally ready to apply for another position within my company. I was never ready in the past but so many things have changed and now I am. This new position would be a step up. I have reason to believe I will probably get hired for it. So you want to know the #1 reason why I'm scared/stressed/sad to possibly take it? Well, I've been on a 4-day work week schedule since April and I love it. Having 3 day weekends has been AMAZING. The new position would be regular Mon-Fri but I would be able to leave early on Fridays, around 2:30 or so. The money would be better, not tons better, but better. The stress would be less. Most importantly, I would finally respect myself more because I'd be moving up in my "career".

But the idea of leaving behind my 3 day weekends sucks. I know I need to get over it!

ooo thats rough, I would LOVE 3 day weekends!  But maybe at some point, that position can change to a 4 day work week?  Or maybe you can ask to work from home one day a week, once you prove yourself? plus, leaving at 2:30 on a friday in the meantime would still be great!!!  Plus i think less stress is a big one and moving forward in your career is a great feeling too!

Blah, that would be really hard to give up 3-day weekends! But, I guess you could look at it like the lower stress level means you NEED 3-day weekends less anyway?

And feeling better about yourself moving up in your career is huge. Worth it, I say. At least you still get to leave early on Fridays!

Advancement is wonderful!  And so is more money!  Is it enough money to make it work the extra hours?  I'd prpbably say go for it anyway.  I don't make any more money to do the extra position I've added to mine. (Well I make a better hourly rate when I'm doing it, but I would be making more if I was actually just working a shift and making tips, although writing my own schedule does pay off financially at times) but I like doing it because it is great experience, I always get to learn something, and it gives me a little more respect for myself in my position.  Good luck

Having just taken a promotion and am now working a lot more hours and having more stress, think long and hard about, "is more money worth it?"

If more work and more money will allow you to advance in your career, then it is worth it. I guess.

I think you should go for it!  It sounds like a great opportunity and less stress and more money is ALWAYS better  While working an extra half day sucks, I think you will adjust fine and in the end be happy with your decision.

I don't think she was referring to you, but I was all "ouch, burn",  cause you're the only person I know who works for the government.  Well actually now that I think of it my brother does.  He is a CO in a federal prison, also not who I think she was referring to.

Kate- you asked if maybe I could go back to my 4-day schedules someday. I don't think it's very possible as of now, but it could be in the future. No guarantees though. Sigh. Love those 3 day weekends so much!!!

If we're talking about politicians, I'll agree.  If we're talking civil servants, I've worked at two agencies now and I have found that to be the furthest from the truth.  In my experience, though some people really resent the fact that senior civil servants get so much vacation time, they don't have the time to take it because they are committed to and can't get away from their jobs.

You don't get to the top of the food chain in most positions in the Federal government by resting on your laurels.
