Knowing what to plant?

I'm a landscaping newbie for the most part.  Last year we put a new deck on our house and we'd like to beging landscaping around it.  Some basic googling has told me that it's best to plant trees in the autumn/winter.  A local nursery is having a huge shrub and tree sale the next two weekends...but we have no idea where to even start when it comes to choosing trees and shrubs.

Are there any sites that you can direct me to that will help me choose?  If it helps I'm from Ohio, our backyard gets sun all day, and we need things that are forgiving...we don't have the best track record!

Re: Knowing what to plant?

  • I'd visit the local nursery and tell them what you're looking for. They can give you some ideas for what works well in your area given your sun exposure, etc.

  • Google "native shrubs your city/state" to get things that do well in your general climate and soil.  These will be the most forgiving plants you'll find.

  • The best advice I found was to look around your neighborhood and see whats popular in people's yards. Typically everyone will have similar issues (similar drainage, soil conditions and composition, bug issues, disease issues) and what works for all of them will most likely work for you too.
