Pet people

Ever since I switched my dogs back to kibble one of them has been eating super fast. 1/2 cup a food in less than a minute. I started feeding him out of a muffin tin. At first, he was confused but now he eats all his kibble in less than a minute after 3/4 days. He picks/knocks balls out of his bowl, doesn't do treat balls (just chews in frustration), and I can't fathom hand feeding him for forever. What's a girl to do?

Re: Pet people

  • I bought my rescue dog a bowl that makes him slow down.  It has different sections.

  • Perhaps it's because I'm on my phone but I can't see the photo. I assume it would be like the muffin tin though... Link?

  • I would love to have an answer to this as well.  We have two resuce dogs and the female eats like it is going out of style and the male takes FOREVER!!!! I would love a happy medium here!
  • Do you feed the dogs out of the same bowl?  Is one dog harassing the other one when it's meal time?

Both of my cats bully each other on occasion causing the "victim" to hurry up and eat to avoid the offender.  Two bowls didn't fix the situation so we just try to monitor them when we're home.

  • Put it in a bowl with water so it gets partly soggy, then freeze it in a Kong.  If you don't want him to take quite that long to eat, you could pull it out of the freezer an hour or so before he eats so it thaws a bit, but it'll still require him to slow down.

This is the problem with smart dogs, man.  Outsmarting muffin tins just to spite you! Stick out tongue

No. They have separate bowls and are fed in their own kennels (except when using the muffin tin). They aren't free choice fed or whatever they call them these days. I dont even let them investigate each others bowls after they are done eating. Ojo-that sounds disgusting. I will try it. And yes, he is smart! When I first fed him from the muffin tin, he looked at me and seemed to say "are you kidding me mom? WTF is this???!"

  • Look into an everlasting treat ball. I cant remember the company that makes it but they really are rediculously durable. My friends malinous cant even destroy it. Anyway get a size larger than they recommend. The large size can hold a little over a half cup. Only put a treat in one side or not at all and fill the middle with kibble. It takes my girl upwards of 15 minutes to eat breakfast. Thay are a little pricey but worth the investment!

Ahh sorry... stupid PIP.  Here is a link, it doesn't slow my dog down to normal speed, but it has slowed him down a bit.

You just described my dogs.  The female inhales her food.  I don't think she stops to breathe.  The male dog acts like it's a 4 course meal.  He takes a bite, looks around, chews, takes a bite, lifts his head, repeat, repeat.  It takes him forever to finish.
