Azalea question
Last fall we took out some evergreen bushes from the front of our house & planted some small azalea bushes. They bloomed this Spring, but unfortunately got neglected this summer (I had a baby at the end of May).
We never got any mulch in the bed & the didn't get watered a lot when it was extremely hot. Right now, the leaves are brown & crunchy and a lot have fallen off. Is this normal for the Fall/Winter? Also, because there wasn't any mulch, when it did rain or get watered it seems like the soil ran where they are planted & it seems like the roots/rootball are really shallow.
Any suggestions or are they pretty much dead?

Sounds like drought death.
There are some decidous azaleas, but most are evergreen, so your azalea should probably look about the same as when you planted it. Right now, mine have new growth at the tips of every branch.
Azaleas have shallow, fibrous roots and shouldn't be deeply planted. They like well-drained soil and need LOTS of water the first few seasons to establish.
