Quick daycare question...

Would you put your kiddo ran by family? She does a good job...just not sure I want to mix daycare and family together. My DH says he doesn't want to mix the two...thoughts? Not even sure she would have an opening when needed but thought I"d ask others opinions before I asked.

  • Nope.

  • Never.  And not just because I have crazy family, but because I don't really believe in mixing business & family.  It's way more difficult to express any concerns or whatnot you might have just because they're family - feelings and all that ;).  I also would never want anything brought up regarding daycare (business) at a family function or DCP/family member calling another family member and discussing my kid at daycare, potential problems, etc.  Ick.  Just could get hairy, I think.

The only exception would be my mom watching them.

  • Thanks! You reaffirmed me and my DH's thinking. It wasnt even a thought until my cousin posted on my FB post. I was just making sure I wasnt crazy!

    Thanks again :)

  • My aunt does our daycare, and we've never had any issues.  She has 7 other kids there too, so I have the piece of mind that someone I 100% trust is watching my kid, and she gets the benefit of socialization.  Going back to work was so much easier for me because I didn't worry about her at all.
  • Depends on the family member.Big Smile

My SIL runs an in-home daycare and has watched both E and I since they were 9w old.  She is pretty awesome and we don't have issues mixing family and business.

  • I would love my SIL to care for Sawyer.  She doesn't do daycare but in the Fall she is too busy but in the Spring she may watch him every now and then.

I think it depends on your relationship with the family member.

  • I wouldn't, but I don't trust any of my family to watch B for more than a couple hours (and even that is pushing it!).

But, it really depends on the relationship - I would have a hard time expressing concerns if it was a family member because I don't want to hurt their feelings. But, if you can stay neutral and treat it as business and make sure it's business and not family... then it'd be okay.

  • Our daycare lady was my sister in law's mother. So, not immediate family, but we knew them well and spent a fair amount of time with them before we had A. There are obviously pros and cons. The pros being of course that you know them and trust them, and in our case she was a lot cheaper than other places. The major con that I found was that if something was bothering me about what she was or wasn't doing, I never felt like I could say anything because she was family. Granted, most of the stuff that upset me wasn't major, but I still hated that feeling of just having to accept it and not handle it the way I would have if it was someone else.
