I am a nurse and currently have two prn jobs, meaning that I sign up to work when they have openings and/or call and ask for help. I am only obligated to work 1 day a month at both positions. There are no required weekends or holidays with this position.
Job #1 is the one I have been at the longest, and was full time at one point. I dropped my hours and eventually went prn after the birth of my daughter. When I was full/part time I was required to work every other holiday and every other weekend. I did this for years, but decided I no longer wanted to miss out on family events once my LO was in the picture. Also, this job is a 1 hour commute both ways and I did not want to have to make that commute regularly.
Job #2 I have been at since April. I really love this job, and although the milage varies I do get compensated for it, as well as travel time. I work this job the most, usually a couple of days a week, or more if they call me and are willing to adjust hours based on my babysitting needs. This Job is also a prn position, which means I am not required to work holidays or weekends unless I sign up for them.
Today I got an email from Job #2, it was sent to a number of people and stated that holiday coverage was not being met, and needed to be. Also, a sign up sheet for all 2012 holidays was being put out and we'd have to sign up for them soon. It did not say how many holidays would be required, and no details were given. The email came from the director.
I am confused by this... the reason I am prn is because I do not want to work holidays. I want to spend them with my new LO. At Job #1 full and part time nurses alternate holidays for coverage purposes. Thats pretty much the norm around here, which is why I can't figure out why Job #2 never has the coverage for holidays, because they supposedly do this too. I don't want to lose my job over it, but at the same time its not what I agreed to. I know I have the option to celebrate holidays on different days, and I get that, I've done it for years, but its not what I want now. I'm tired of rearragning my life for my job, thats the whole reason I took such a pay cut, lost benefits (dh carries us now) and went prn, and sought out an additonal prn position.
I guess this is mostly a vent, but also a question. WWYD? Should I email the director back and ask for clarification?

I'm also a prn nurse, and my job specifically states that prn staff must work one holiday of their choosing. I opt for Memorial Day every year.
As pp said, you should ask for clarification.
I am trying to figure out an appropriate way to word it.
I feel like "the pressure is on" or something since this was sent before Christmas. But I do feel strongly about not working this holiday, as well as not working LOs first birthday which is the 23rd. We have plans and I did not anticipate being required to work, which again I don't think I was the specific target, but all the same.
I could probably swallow having to work 1 or 2 holidays a year, and with enough time to rework things that would be fine. I think it just struck a nerve up panic and make me upset because Christmas is so soon, and of course, this IS why I chose to go this route.
I'd ask for clarification. They might want you to work 1 holiday day per year (which would be fine IMO), you might be exempt from working holidays, or you might have to work some a higher percentage of the holidays than you'd like.
Find out what is being required of you, then decide if the issue is big enough issue to leave your job over.
I agree with this.
also - the company sending this email out now, so close to christmas, will totally allow you to say, 'sorry, i can't work this christmas b/c we travel' (or something, make something up!). that way, if they do clarify that you ought to be working one holiday a year (or something, and i agree, that request is reasonable), offer to do labour day or memorial day or something less significant than christmas.
