Bought a new car today!!!!! And if you have OnStar or XM radio

So excited!   We just bought an Acadia today!  I'm in LOVE and it's not even in my driveway yet!  I get it Monday!  YAY!!!!!!

Question.....if you have OnStar in your car....is it worth it?  I get it free for 6mths, but wondering if it's worth the money after the 6mths is up?!?!?   Have you ever used it?   Which features have you used?

What about XM radio, I get that free for 3mths, just wondering if it's worth keeping when the trial is over.  Do you like it?  Did you not like it and got rid of it?

Thanks!

  • i have the traverse which is the chevy equivalent. you're going to love it!!!

we didn't continue with onstar. for like $15 more than what we would pay for 1 car, we have both of us and both cars covered on AAA.

we both do have XM. I've had it for the last 6 years and enjoy it -- especially when we travel so we don't have to search for local radio stations, and during the holidays when they have the 24/7 xmas channels from nov-to early jan. ;)

  • Congrats!

I can no longer live with out Sirius. Even now that I don't have an hour commute I'm still keeping it. It's just so nice not to have commercials. Well, Howard takes breaks but I can deal with that. I love it. When I renew in a few months I'm going to add the online subscription too cause I'll listen to it at work or at home. I NEVER listen to regular radio anymore. And I was one of those people who SWORE up and down that I would never pay for radio. Yeah, well, it's totally worth it.

We were actually between the Traverse and the Acadia, just got a better deal on the Acadia and jumped (faster than we thought we would) today!   Obviously I loved the Traverse too since they are basically the same car!  :)   Good points on the XM...something to think about!

  • I have Sirius/XM and I love it. I've had it for about 7 years now. I commute into the city using the car so I love it for that I have my stations that I listen to (talk) in the AM and on the way home. DH and I always can agree to put on the 80's station, but if I'm alone I'll put on broadway or pop. I love the Holiday Stations during December. DH really likes more of the hard rock and things of that nature. We don't have kids but I know they have kid stations as well.

I think living with it for 3 months will help you to decide if its for you. Check out all of the station options and see if you like them. I like the variety without needing a CD or a charged and full ipod, but I really like the chat stations that I listen to which I couldn't get without it.

  • Both of our cars have onstar. (Hummer H2 and H3) We love it. If you are drving and an engine light comes on you call them and they do a diagnostic and they tell you what it is that is wrong they can even make an appointment for you at your dealership if you want them too. But that way you know if it's something that you need to do right away. If you are alone in the car with your kids say ... you don't have to worry what is that light should I stop someplace etc. We have used it to contact police when things have happend while driving they connect you right to whatever town you are in. We were almost run off the road by some crazy bimbo and she was blocking us and stopping short so we gave the cops the info on her and car description and plate # and where she got off so they could stop her to see if she was drunk or something. You can also add minutes to your phone right thru them and get your directions ( on some vehicles they can download it right to your car and you can listen to it as you drive.  I just called then to cancel because I could not afford it right now and they gave us 3 months for free.  Sorry but I do love it. I am going to be sad when I really have to cancel it , it really is peace of mind for me.

As far as XM I am just not a fan but I know most people love it. But I listen to the same 6 cd's for 8 months at a time before I change them so that's just me.

  • When my3 months came up, they called me and asked if I wanted to renew. The offered me another 6 months at only $4 a month. I accepted and told them to bills me rather than giving my credit card. That way they couldn't automatically renew my subscription when the 6 months is over. I am gaping thatbin 6 months they will call again and give me another good deal. If not I may just cancel it.

  • I have a traverse, love it.  I love having xm especially since we go to the shore in the summer and radio stations are lacking down there.

Onstar I LOVE!!!  we do not have AAA so it has been a lifesaver.  I blew a tire in NY, ran out of gas for the first time in my life and had another flat tire 2 months ago ...and used Onstar every time for help.  We do not pay for the directions one which I think is included in the trial just the basic one.  I use my phone for directions.

    Congratulations on your new car!

  • BOth dh and I subsribed to sirius (him) and xm (me) after the free months were up., definitely worth the money, imo!

    Congrats on the new car!

  • Congrats! Jealous!

I have Sirius and have had it for about 6 years... and freakin' lOVE it.  I got it b/c of Howard Stern, but even if he left- I'd keep it for sure... it's so wonderful to be able to pick channels no matter where you are driving in the state/country, etc - and know what they will be... many without commercials... be able to pick kids channels, news, etc - i LOVE Sirius and will never NOT have it again.

I have never had on-star but funny you ask b/c the other day i was thinking how I wish I did have it... I was driving home and it was rainy out - dark and no cars around and I thought "if i got into an accident right now nobody would know... " and was wishing that I had on-star for that reason.

I used to be Goldie_locks_5 but the new nest is so screwed up that I was forced to start over.

  • We've never had OnStar, but have had XM radio.

For me, XM Radio is ONLY good if I can listen to the music that I want or the stations that I like. The kids pretty much will ONLY listen to jazz - the only station that doesn't annoy any of us, actually. So, XM isn't really worth it. I think we had it for 6 months and then just didn't get it again.

I always had it in our cars previously - this is pre-kids! LOL!

    GL! Enjoy your new car!

  • And I'll add, that for long trips, the kids usually watch DVD's, so we can't use the radio. If we need the radio and we can't find a station, we just plug in our iPhones since our music is on there........

  • We have XM/Sirius in our cars and love it. I don't think I even know what radio channels are popular or would listen to on the regular radio.

  • congrats! I got a GMC Terrain and I LOVE it.

I let the XM expire two weeks ago. I enjoyed it for the 3 months but for me just driving around its not worth it. The OnStar hasn't expired yet but I may keep it for the safety issue.

Gotta say, in 1 yr they cheaped up. Hubby bought a new chevy last summer and got XM free for 6 months and OnStar for a year. The cut it in half in one year!

Best of luck with your new car.

  • I LOVE sirius.  I listen to Howard, but also a lot of the music channels - and Ryan absolutely loves Kids Place Live (ch. 78 on Sirius, but I think it is different on XM).  I hated it at first but it has really grown on me!
